The Beethoven mandolin sonatina then? I am so tempted to give it to you, os, but it cannot be, for there are two sonatinas from which you must pick the correct one. [And this is not a minor matter.]

181 is a Little Jig by Mozart, K574. Correct! It is an example of the great composer's instinctive wish to push against the boundaries and produce the unpredictable; had Mozart lived in the twentieth century perhaps he would have been a somewhat sprightlier Webernian and not bothered with all those operas. Incidentally this link - www.naxos.com - may be useful to members wishing to prepare puzzles. There are there literally tens of thousands of extracts from the classical repertoire. The first forty seconds of every "track" are available without payment, and the quality is acceptable is not it?

The C major one of course O.K., despite the fact that it is not so designated on the recording I used, it does bear that title in another instance, so you may claim you r prize. In the recording the extract is taken from the piece is simply called "Siciliano in C WoO 44a".

Puzzle 161 has almost reached its sell-by date so to recap the clues so far: it's by Prokofiev and it's not ballet music. Furthermore I can reveal it was written at about the same time as his Classical Symphony, but it's not from a symphony.

I'll plump for Prokofiev's Sinfonietta Op.5.

Two separate clues here:
First clue for puzzle 174: Schoenberg famously told us that plenty of good music in this key would be written in the future. (We know the composer do not we.)
First clue for puzzle 178: It is a Symphony written not by Simpson as might be thought but by an American. It sounds pretty gritty does it not?

I'll plump for Prokofiev's Sinfonietta Op.5.
Indeed, it is the Scherzo form Prokofiev's Sinfonietta Op. 5, later revised, (as was the composer's way), as Op. 48.

So famously, indeed, that no one that I know has been able to trace its source - not even some of Schönberg's biographers. No one at the Schoenberg Institute in California could come up with it and even the estimable Schönberg Center in Vienna cannot throw light on it, so if you by chance are party to this information, your revelation of it would be immensely appreciated!

I must listen to it properly some time. The recording I have is coupled with the 7th Symphony, (Neeme Järvi), and while I have listened to that recording of the 7th, (with the imposed 'happy ending'), often enough, I don't recall ever having given the Sinfonietta much of a hearing.

According to Dika Newlin it was said to his advanced composition class at UCLA, some time around 1940.
