I'll take a wild guess that it's the beginning of the Première Leçon.

Fair enough - you have it Richard (though I suppose 'François' is a bit difficult to spell). Well done, and 100 points go to you.

Don't know about musical connections, but No 59 sounds like Philip Glass to me. (It also sounds like Parsifal, as I said on the other thread, but that doesn't mean I think it is Parsifal!)

Changes to the rules relating to the calculation of points:

First change: If after a lapse of five days a puzzle expires unsolved, the setter while retaining his hundred points for the setting itself will no longer receive any time bonus points (hitherto he received a bonus of 480 points for the five days).

This amended rule will apply starting with Puzzle 60. The purpose of its introduction is the discouragement of the setting and subsequent expiry of puzzles referring to works too obscure or unfamiliar, and the encouragement of a livelier interchange between Members.

Note that it remains possible for Member A to set an obscure work, but - not at the beginning but as the five days draw to a close - it will henceforth be in his interest to provide hints. However at the same point in time it may be in the interest of a second Member, Member B, not to respond to those hints, hoping thus to ensure that Member A will lose a sizeable number of bonus points. On the other hand, a third Member, Member C, may not care about A's total, but only about his own, and might thus in defiance of B indeed respond to the hints, giving himself 180 and A the bonus!

Second change: a Member who correctly solves a puzzle will receive 180 points plus (if he solves it within 180 minutes of its setting) a bonus of 180 less the number of minutes since its setting, instead of 100 points plus a bonus of 100 less the number of minutes since its setting as has been in the past the case. This amended rule will be immediately effective.

The current aim of the test is to find the first Member who can reach 10,000 points!

A revised more attractive and more extensively computerised version of the statistics is on the way; we hope people will bear with any delays in the mean time.

May we finally draw the attention of Members (and especially of Mr. Thompson) to the fact that "clues" should be provided not in the main competition thread - where they will attract a penalty - but in the discussion thread.

Our Puzzle 39 was the fourth of the Quatre poèmes de Sappho by Charles Chaynes, sung by Mady Mesplé with the Trio à cordes français, from this extremely fine disc whose works for string ensemble also strongly merit the attention of Members.

Here is the fourth movement complete.

Our clue thereto was from a recording of Die Jakobsleiter by Arnold Schoenberg. The intention as stated was to help Members identify the singer although we are pleased to have introduced the work itself to at least one Member. While the Chaynes work itself is perhaps not completely unobscure we genuinely had thought a few Members would possess this recording. We certainly thought Mady Mesplé's voice unmistakable enough that the search should not be too difficult - she did not record so much contemporary repertoire after all...

Satyagraha?

Interesting, but alas incorrect.
I've a feeling I confused two composers we're supposed to deny ever actually sound all that similar. Embarrassed

Is it John Adams, Nixon in China?
