At the risk of a further deduction of points from my tally for a reply which is possibly off-topic, I feel it incumbent upon myself to advise member Grew that I feel myself unworthy of the points awarded for my solution of member Sudden's conundrum, having arrived at the answer by happenstance rather than knowledge, and would respectfully suggest that said puzzle (no. 6) be declared void, and the relevant score removed from my total: to do otherwise would be to deprive me of the code of honesty by which I try (not always successfully) to run my daily affairs.

I thank him in advance for his forbearance in this matter.

Status so far:

Puzzle 1: set by Mr. Grew - as yet unsolved; links to new 59-second snatches are here and here
Puzzle 2: set by Mr. Dish here - as yet unsolved
Puzzle 3: set by Mr. Grew, solved by Mr. Sudden
Puzzle 4: set by Mr. Sudden, solved by Mr. Inquisitor
Puzzle 5: set by Mr. Macrae, solved by Mr. Opilec
  Puzzle 6: void
Puzzle 7: set by Mr. Sudden here - as yet unsolved
Puzzle 8: set by Mr. Grew, solved by Mr. Dish
Puzzle 9: set by Mr. Baziron here - as yet unsolved

Well! At the present rate no one is going to solve puzzle 1. We do not like to see every one stuck, especially since it is an introductory or pilot puzzle. Let us then expand the length of the extract to fifty-nine seconds: the new links are in the table above. Some one should now at last recognise the music; the composer is after all very well known, and Members have had no problem with Mozart and Webern although Puzzles 2 7 and 9 are also giving trouble.

I am ready to reveal the composer of Puzzle 2. Please stop me if you don't want to hear it, and I won't spoil it for you.

As for Puzzle 10, it may be easier. I can't say. I have no idea what people listen to around here, but reed trios in imitative forms by composers who compare themselves to Musorgski seem to be low on the list.

Just stumbled on this thread. Puzzle 5 is Janacek's Dunaj (Danube) symphony, third movement.
That is pretty weird stuff. I have to agree with Mr Grew and say I look forward to hearing the rest as soon as possible.

Is extract 10 the First Violin Concerto by Grazyna Bacewicz? She wrote seven altogether, of which we know only the fourth, which is not the answer, so this suggestion is pure guesswork founded only upon a) hints dropped by Mr. Dish, and b) a certain similarity of style in the solo writing.

Not Bacewicz, much more Meddityrrhenaean.

In which case. I'll raise you a Skalkottas, I think, Dishy - Violin Concerto of '38?

I reckon not Skalkottas. How about a Malipiero concerto?

Malipiero is correct. It's the soloist's first entrance in the second movement.

Definitely worth a second listen, eh? Congrats to autoharp, and apologies for choosing something obscure. Still, I think the composer is very much overlooked (wrong place, wrong time, who knows?), so this may be an incitement more than anything.

Huh

That's another 75 points down the drain then......
