Here is puzzle 125

That is Edward Elgar's Piano Quintet in A minor Opus 84 is not it Madame A?

It certainly is Mr Grew  Grin

Madame A

Thank you Madame A; it is nice to get something right. We were very frustrated by number 112 since following your hint we listened carefully but in vain to Delius's Violin Sonatas 1, 2, and 3. We were entirely ignorant of that beautiful 1892 Sonata in B!

I'm afraid not Anty (because unlike the composer needed I don't think Barber ever studied with Charles Villiers Stanford - now there's a clue!).

Only just accessed 102 - has it been solved or has it expired? - is it Roslavets? (wild guess) - Chamber Symphony?

A good guess Mr. Autoharp - for it is correct! The music of Roslavets is destined we feel to become more and more influential and popular as time goes by; it will help to turn serious music back from some of the wild and wrong-headed paths it has taken. Unfortunately many of his large-scale productions appear already to have been lost.

Grove tells us that this particular work was written in 1926, and that it was "completed by Raskatoff in 1989." It also makes mention of a second Chamber Symphony, dating from 1934. Our performance took place in Latvia and was rebroadcast from Swedish Radio; there is a long spoken introduction in Latvian with Swedish voice-over and we cannot understand a single word thereof.

119 is, I think, Haydn Wood's Phantasy for strings.

119 is, I think, Haydn Wood's Phantasy for strings.

Correct Bryn - but better known as his Fantasy-Concerto.

Apparently its genesis was the String Quartet he entered in 1905 for the Cobbett Musical Competition for chamber music - all entries for which had to bear the word 'fantasy'. This 44 years later he reworked for string orchestra and retained the word 'fantasy'.

Baz, from http://www.musicweb-international.com/garlands/Haydnwood.htm :

Quote
Haydn studied the violin, latterly at the RCM with Arbós and then in Brussels, whilst at the RCM he had composition lessons with Stanford, to whom much later he was to pay tribute with his "Stanford Rhapsody" Westward Ho. He won a Cobbett Prize with his Phantasie in F major for string quartet, a substantial movement some 23 minutes long and mentioned in Cobbett's Dictionary as being charming and slightly influenced by Dvorák.

The item later mentions the work both as "Phantasy for Strings" and as "Fantasy-Concerto".

The work was new to me, thought those Blooming Roses were not. Wink

I have only just managed to download puzzle 120, and find that it reminds me strongly of Morton Feldman's (first) String Quartet.

I also have a suspicion that puzzle 118 might be by André Jolivet.

You are quite right re. the Feldman String Quartet of 1979, richard. (What do you make of that strange 'twang' on the first note of the second example. I don't know the score, but it is so different from the first example.)

I do not think M. Jolivet was around and composing in the last decade of 19th Century, (see Reply 626 on the discussion thread).

So, 120 is solved, 116 and 118 remain to be correctly identified.

116 must be by Heitor Villa-Lobos of Rio de Janeiro.
