I'm in Brussels at the moment - the inspiration for this thread came when I needed to answer nature's call at Bruxelles Midi station this morning, and on entering the Gents was surprised to hear .... a bizarrely saccharine electronic arrangement of Schubert's Ave Maria.  Distinctly surreal.

Any other recollections of really strange use of piped classical music?

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

I'm not sure it qualifies as muzak, but I remember finding the use of a rhythmically-"enhanced" Prelude to La Traviata a singularly inappropriate thing to be hearing while riding on the Gallopers at Blackpool Pleasure Beach Huh

Ein süßer, heiliger Akkord von dir
Den Himmel beßrer Zeiten mir erschlossen,
Du holde Kunst, ich danke dir dafür!
