Seen on a recruitment web-site today: Our shops offer an exciting, fast-paced and professional working environment where the words “Competition Beating Service” are a way of life. I wonder what member Grew might make of this term and all its possible implications.

Heard on Masterchef: "I want a platform to showcase my talent to the world".
Blimey.

What is your level of English (Native, Fluent, Very Good, Good, Medium or Poor)?
I like how 'native' is in a separate category from 'fluent'. (Such a question would be illegal in America: only fluency could be inquired about).

It's meaningless anyway, isn't it, given that a lot of 'non native' people have a far better command of English thanyour average 'native' person!

That was, indeed, rather part of the irony that struck me initially.

As I understand it 'native' is so far from merely 'fluent' that I wouldn't be surprised to find that some even have another category in between. 'Fluent' strictly speaking doesn't mean flawless (although I know it's often used as though it did), just that you can keep it flowing, surely? I can sometimes pass for fluent in French or German for a few sentences but as soon as I put two words together it's obvious I'm not native...

Given that it's pissing rain outside, that I don't have enough cash for a proper lunch, I popped on here (ssh-ing into college and using a text-based web-browser for privacy reasons). Yep; for the next three weeks I shall be entering raffle-ticket details into my computer. Not a bad job, as job goes, certainly. And the office/people are pretty nice. I haven't messed up too much though thus far (in that people don't care if some details are messed up so long as all the money gets put through). A lot of money going through, indeed: the fund-raiser has proven massively popular this year (hense the need for another temp).
Right, off to do something more productive now.
Laters,

Given that it's pissing rain outside What, in Ireland? surely not. Hope it isn't too onerous. I did an amusing selection of jobs in my early twenties before hitting on one (music-copying) that I could keep both brain and body alive with.

I wonder what member Grew might make of this term and all its possible implications. I wonder what other members might make of the entire sentence; its interpretative possibilities, whilst not endless (they never can be) are certainly many. For starters, Member Pace might care to consider suing for copyright breach. But whichever way one might read it, it seems almost enough to discourage most people from applying...

It's not too bad. Currently it seems like I'm not going to be able to go on complete auto-pilot, given how terrible some people's handwriting can be. I'm sure I'll find myself tripping up less and less as time goes on. Hard to tell, I imagine, with work like this, how one is going to find it until one has done it for some length of time.
