Some of you may have seen, and even tried, the 'Mosquito' frequency samples in one of the threads at TOP.  Here is a more reliable test of the range of your audio frequency perception. This is a full sweep from 0Hz to approximately 22.05kHz (there is a fairly step roll-off above 20kHz). What you do is play the file in something like WinAmp which has a time elapsed indication. Note the times at which you begin to hear the low frequency start, and when you cease to hear the high pitch, later on. Then report back. I will endeavour to establish the range you find yourself perceiving.

Onset: 0.02 (presumably this is more a function of my subwoofer than my ears): disappearance: 0.23

Taking that as indicating 2 seconds to 23seconds, that equates to a frequency range of 50Hz to 10kHz.

Thanks. Sadly, the upper limit is what I expected - I can no longer hear the short pipes on familiar organ recordings as well as I could five years ago.

Out of interest, what should it be, Bryn?

There's no real "should", ...tr..., the cilea which pick up the higher frequencies fail and are not replaces as the years accumulate. There are statistics relating to mean frequency range perception by age, but there are too many variables involved. However, once you past your mid-twenties, it's downhill all the way. I can just about make it to 24 seconds, which equates to a top frequency of about 12 kHz. Five years ago I could still hear a little above 15kHz. Sad

There's a sort of rule of thumb chart of upper frequency perception limit by age, here.

Thanks again Bryn. 12 kHz is just audible but a lot quieter than 8 (about 10 dB down, I should think). I'm 62, so I guess that's not too bad.

3.1 seconds to 25.9 seconds - but I'm pretty sure the speaker system I have at the computer is limiting the bottom end...might burn a CD and try it with my new REL sub-bass system  Grin

On the other site (mosquito ringtone) I could hear - just - the 16.7 kHz tone, which I'm quite happy with as a 31-year-old

Computer says 17.1kHz at 25.9 seconds, though how you got the timing that precise eludes me. Wink
