Congratulations to all our female members of all ages and genders, on March 8th - International Women's Day. And no, it's not only in Russia that it's celebrated!

Quite right, BBM! You are supposed to be doing it all today! Fetching, carrying, painting, decorating, preparing supper, washing-up, and providing a continuous commentary in praise of womankind all the while

So far today, I've done nothing. Neither with International Women's Day in mind, nor in any other respect

Sorry, if we need Internationl Womens Day, then that implies we need it, not some flip sexist message about women fetching and carrying.

Indeed. As I understand it, International Women's Day is not so much a time for providing a continuous commentary in praise of womankind all the while
as campaigning for greater recognition of the achievements of women, which are often sidelined through e.g. cultural considerations, and for greater equality. Quite right, BBM! You are supposed to be doing it all today! Fetching, carrying, painting, decorating, preparing supper, washing-up Better still, it's the time to consider if the distribution of labour within your household is as it is through choice of the participants or through inherited cultural prejudice. IWD will be 100 years old in 2011 so it's not exactly a new concept. See http://www.internationalwomensday.com/about.asp for more details of its history.

International Womens Day
Could men stop referring to "my/the missus", "the wife", or "er indoors"
We do have names, we are not only an appendage to yourselves.

It's a good point, but on a forum like this, partners can often want to maintain a certain distance from their other-half's internet activities afforded them by a rather anonymous reference ('my wife'/'my husband'/'my girlfriend'/'my boyfriend') and these are often not so much a statement of ownership as an explanation of the web of relationship that connects us to them whilst maintaining a level of anonymity. I rather think that it's often the way in which these things are expressed that carries more problematic assertions of ownership than the phraseology itself.
