When in doubt, wash.

I’ve just unearthed my old postcard collection - not many but some are interesting and amusing. Perhaps other posters would like to share theirs too if they have any? Unfortunately I can’t scan them in but I’ll type out a couple, starting with my favourite addressed to:

THOMAS MATTHEWS
ARTESIAN WELL BORER
PENDLETON
MANCHESTER

And postmarked WARRINGTON 9.15 PM (yes PM!) JU 16 O2
On the reverse is a printed form, filled in in pencil.

MUST BE SENT EVERY DAY
June 16 1902
Commenced work.......8a.m.
Bored this day.............6 ft
Total depth from surface......1.61 ft
Water level from surface......1.57
Strata passed through....light Blue loam at 3 o c
Remarks......... I have had to pore water down all day to Bore
Left at 7/15 p.m.                CONTRACT WORK
Signed.................
For M.................
Signed................H Gore..............Man in Charge

I love the spelling of pore and that his name is Gore!

And one sent 102 years ago to a Mr S Bowman in Marple, from Devil's Bridge, Aberystwyth, with a scenic view on the front. On the reverse, postmarked 5.30 PM, AU 21 05:
Dear Saul,
I am disappointed you did not see me as arranged so. I have come here to recover, but hope to see you when I return.
Oh! if you had only seen me in my new bathing costume, it is made of crepe-de-chine trimmed with asparagus, dandelions.

Poor jilted girl! I wonder if he ever did see her in that bathing costume...she obviously thought it would be most alluring! Perhaps they met on holiday in Aberystwyth but he left early. To escape her clutches? It's a tantalising glimpse into the love life of a young Edwardian lady - and she hasn't signed it so we don't even know her name.

Just a snippet from one more - a photo of Middle Lake, Killarney and on the back:

9/3/11
I am not coming home this weekend. Am giving Dora a week's grace from 7 am. Sorry about the microbes & bacilli. GEC

You couldn't make these up could you!

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.
