This coming Sunday (15th June) on Radio 4:

12:00
Chairman Humph: A Tribute

Stephen Fry presents a special tribute to Humphrey Lyttelton, the sublime host of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, through the eyes of his close pals on the show and distinguished admirers from Dame Judi Dench to Radiohead.

The programme features many highlights taken from his thirty-six years at the helm of Radio 4's perennial antidote to panel games.

Actually, there's a special sequence of Humph programmes beginning (according to Stephen Fry) at 11.15am Sunday with a repeat of Humph's Desert Island Discs, then it's that tribute at 12 then I think there's a programme about his jazz.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Thanks MJ, the R4 online schedule just says

11:15
Desert Island Discs
15 June 2008

Kirsty Young invites novelist Peter Carey to choose eight records to take to Radio 4's mythical desert island.

so they must have changed it.

Later there's:

13:30
The King of the Swingers

The late Humphrey Lyttelton profiles Louis Prima, one of the most prolific and accomplished jazz musicians of the twentieth century who is sadly now remembered mostly for his role as a cartoon monkey.

Just to remind any of you who might want to listen/record them, the tributes to Humph are on tomorrow, beginning with his DID on Radio 4 at 11.15am.

Radio 4 will also broadcast a series of six archive recordings of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue starting on Monday:

Re:"Desert Island Discs, 11.15am-noon
Humphrey Lyttelton's final appearance on the desert island."

I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would. I thought Kirsty was quite rude, supplying words for him when he hesitated, as if he didn't know what to say. Roll Eyes Bring back Roy Plomley! I'd like to hear an earlier DID if it exists, as the word "final" suggests he was on before.  There must be more interviews with Humph made over the years. There are some details of the Oct 2006 DID here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/desertislanddiscs.shtml but don't go there if you haven't heard it yet and don't want to see his choices.

I did like the tribute programme. And no wonder it was well written - Graeme Garden was the scriptwriter. It should have been twice as long though with more generous extracts.

And the Louis Prima programme was very good too. Does anyone know if Radio 2 is broadcasting any more of Humph's jazz programmes? This has whetted my appetite.

I haven't listened to more than the first few minutes of DID yet - I've recorded it of course - but you're putting me off MJ. I've heard all the Stephen Fry programme though - agree it could have been far longer.

Some of the extracts were very familiar to me as I've got recordings of the original programmes which I listen to quite often - but they still made me laugh, especially Lionel Blair pulling off Twelve Angry Men in under 2 minutes Cheesy

Another Lionel Blair favourite of mine is:

In the original, the ever energetic Lionel Blair would mime the titles of TV shows against a strict time limit, and who can fail to remember the occasion he scored double points by using both hands in different actions to finish off One Man & His Dog in under thirty seconds!

I recorded all three programmes this afternoon, but I only listened to the Prima programme because I wanted to listen on-line to a programme on German radio and I also wanted to take a shower.

Like MabelJane I would also like to hear more programmes made by the late Humph: I remember a fine Radio 4 feature in three episodes about the American Forces Network during the Second World War. Smiley

Sorry - ignore my criticism, it's good to hear Humph's stories - particularly about his good friend Louis Armstrong.
