I'm in Israel next week - a sort of working holiday.  Unfortunately, the work is going to take me over the Sabbath (18th/19th July) and all the guide books baldly state that there is NO PUBLIC TRANSPORT FROM FRIDAY AFTERNOON TO SATURDAY EVENING.

Is it quite as black and white as that? If it is, I'm surprised that the country continues to function economically.

Also - on a less urgent note - I want to take a lot of Wagner with me on my ipod.  I've heard that Israeli security is very tough: will it land me in any trouble? (feel very silly to have asked that question, but you never know!)

When I was in Israel I don't think we travelled anywhere on the Sabbath, so I didn't notice if there was any public transport.

But I did notice that every taxi we got was driven by an Arab, not a Jew, so I can't see how it would be a problem.

A 'lapsed' Jewish friend of mine who was in Tel Aviv recently tells me that taxis still operate on the Sabbath, so no buses or trains, but you can still get around.
