I wasn't sure whether to start this thread about interesting scientific stuff here or in News and Current Affairs but then I thought that in fact it might eventually contain material about old as well as new discoveries/theories, so here it is. And to begin with (from 2002 in fact, but I hadn't seen it before today): some new ideas concerning the mechanism of hearing.

More Science. This I find very thought-provoking. If the black holes eat us up, maybe they'll spit us out again if we poke them with a stick!

Re Richard's post I have this to add, a radio program about hearing:

It's 8.50am. The Big Bang should have Banged by now. Are we all dead yet?

Rumour has it that already this bizarre experiment has created a Black Hole into which - over the next few hours - we shall all be slowly and inexorably sucked into a singularity that will bring about our total annihilation.

What we ask has happened to Syd?  Sad

If so then I'm pretty disappointed. It could have been a bit more spectacular. As it is, I'm still sitting in my office and correcting counterpoint assignments. That's neither heaven nor hell.

I personally like to be in a black hall with everybody.
It can be entertaining and funny. Only I want to be in a black hall with interesting people, not boring.

...so I think we can take it that the experiment was at least a limited success then?

I thought that they were powering on today, and only getting up to speed.... not actually bombarding atoms or whatever they are planning to do.  There's still time for the world to dissapear.  Smiley

Whatever the result of experiment is going to be it will be a success. If the black hall will not materialize we we will be glad because we like it this way.  But if we all have to fall into one, then we will not mind it either. I can discuss a lot of things about different kind of education for a long time. Every one likes to say something. We will have no limit on the length of the reply of a question. People who know nothing on the subject can voice their opinion too.

I sincerely hope so. I've been ignoring things with deadlines of next Tuesday and beyond and was counting on it. I'm in real trouble if we are all still here.

At the moment I want the black whole to appear on the 22 of September, after opera performance.  This week is too early for me. The next is better.
After that the black whole can again appear in November (but not at the end of October because I have plans). After November I can safely say that I would not mind about the black hall at all.
As far as I am concerned it can come now too, who cares.

I personally think black is a very poor decoration - have you thought of brighter colours like magnolia or jumping bean (especially since the hallway is the first sight visitors have)?

On second thoughts, please don't answer that otherwise we shall end up converting this thread into another "education" one.

If all this means I don't actually have to bother with my tax return, bring it on.  Tongue
