We are planning a tour this autumn and I am planning to take in the Rocco churches of Bavaria. At one point on the itinerary we will be near that heartland of all that is not Rococo in German Art, Bayreuth. (We will be giving Oberamagau a miss as well. Ottobeuren, Vierzehnheligen, Die Wies are definites.)
Any suggestions of a modest place to stay?
And a place to eat that is not German School Dinners (as one member feelingly described German catering to me in a PM)?

Small cave to let, share with one respectable elderly man and his adopted son. Evening meals included - broth is our speciality. Rental or exchange for some light arc-welding duties and/or slaying a smallish dragon. No Wanderers thank you.
I'll get me Tarnhelm...

We have booked in the night before at Nuremburg, no doubt with a theatrical landlady specialising in the better class of male crooner. I had that Walter von Stolzing with me last midsummer. He's really made a name for himself now. Ever so nice he was. He always had seconds of my home made blood pudding at breakfast.

Nuremberg is a wise choice I think. When I first saw your thread title I thought it was a joke! (at THIS time of year?!?!?)
Keep the windows closed at night though, it can get a bit noisy.

Not like that Fricka. Very haughty and the rams made a hell of a mess. And don't get me started on them Valkyries' hen night.

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Dear Herr Basilio,
I can recommend Klingsor's Castle - it's magic (though the garden passes its best remarkably quickly).

Klingsor's Castle - it's magic And the Hotel Walhall was simply divine until that awful fire. And the Hall of the Gibichungs is like a kind of mythical Fawlty Towers.

The wind fairly whistles through that chink in the wall. You'd think they'd get some builders in, really.

What they charge these days is atrocious though.

Now I have to watch the whole episode, you evil tempter. Thank you, Richard. I wonder why Alf was never broadcast on Dutch TV. The Dutch version of this series ( In Voor en Tegenspoed) was brilliant and very popular. I have all seasons on DVD. "Ik zal er nog eens over nadenken." "Denken? Waarmee?"I do miss good humour on Dutch TV nowadays.
