Take a bicycle and go for two weeks.  I've just been cycling around Ireland for a week, and would willingly have stayed for another week if schedule permitted.  All you need is a couple of changes of t-shirt and undies, and some zip-off chinos - and a walkman with fm-radio (you can get a pocket fm-radio receiver in a pound-shop).  Oh, and a helmet to protect you from some of the nutters behind the wheel Wink  With the school holidays over next week, you should be able to turn-up at almost any B&B without booking Smiley

I don't know the rules of "wild camping" in the Lake District area - in a lot of places in Britain you can't put a tent up "just anywhere"...   before buying your tiny tent, I would check first to find out if and where you can pitch it Wink  Wind-up torches and radios are fine when the weather is lovely...   for myself, I was very happy to come back to a warm B&B and a hot shower after 60km through the constant drizzle on the way to Limerick Wink

I believe that Scotland is the only place you can legally wild-camp in Britain, and then at least 100m from a road. Or else there's the unofficial rule: Set late, rise early, be discreet, and hope the ranger doesn't come along to catch Yogi.
