I don't know much about Armenian music. I don't know why.
They did dance Armenian dances too durin old times, but the music did not stay in my mind.

Is this example good?

The only Armenian composer I know is Khachaturyan. I like him. He was a student of Shostakovich and conductor of our college orchestra. I used to see him going to rehearsals often.

Thank you, ...trj..

I know names of two more composers now. I may
have heard the name of composer Terterian before.

This is also interesting information from his site:

In the Nachfolge Avet Terterians /
Internationales Festival Neuer Musik
Ekaterinograd, Russia

Do they have it every year or only in 2002?

I like Ron Dough's idea about going there for a trip for you. For me it is only a dream, but one never knows.

Terterian is probably best known for his symphonies - they're nothing like Shostakovich, more like Symphony no.2-era Gorecki. (In my book this is a good thing.) I think all of them have been recorded, although they're not always easy to find. You can hear some samples from Symphonies 7 and 8 here: http://www.emusic.com/album/The-Ural-Philharmonic-Orchestra-Avet-Terterian-Symphonies-Nos-7-8-MP3-Download/11184704.html

Mansurian is better known. ECM have released at least three CDs of his music. This one won a Grammy award when it came out a few years ago:

This one is all choral music and nice, but a little bland: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ars-Poetica-Tigran-Mansurian/dp/B000EHRXF4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1220367329&sr=8-1 And I don't know the string quartet CD: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mansurian-String-Quartets-Nos-Testament/dp/B000A2WF3I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1220367329&sr=8-2

Thank you. I am now investigating.
I found that Tigran Mansurian has several piano violin sonatas and some Romances and a trio.
I find the beginning of the symphony very unusual and interesting sound effects.
May be I should order scores instead. Now it is on my list. Thank you.

There's a faint note of hope in this news, perhaps?

The part they left out was:

Free with every Armenian Girl - fourteen of her brothers & uncles with very long sharp knives.

In many ways Armenia remains a very conservative country...
