Here's a film that (ultimately) makes me happy, not least for its honesty: With you there, Ian. And also for its excetionally fine score by Ry Cooder (a great example of less-is-more, apart from anything else).

http://www.nonesuch.com/mynameisbuddy/Not exactly the same calibre as the soundtrack of Paris, Texas but the first one of these clips makes me smile and this is, after all, the Happy thread.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

I've just got back from an ace concert. I did mention it on the Grumpy thread but they're all too grumpy on there at the moment so I've landed on here for now.
It was a really excellent performance especially considering it is an amateur choir, but they had great back-up with superb professional soloists and the Northern Chamber Orchestra. I thoroughly enjoyed the concert which was very well attended as well. We're very fortunate to have Barbara Robotham as the President and she is able to bring along superb soloists. On the whole very good value for money.
If any of you ever go to Blackpool, do visit our beautiful little Matcham theatre, The Grand. I've been a supporter for many years, a "patron" for a while and now a "friend". I'll be honest and tell you that the theatre is the only thing worth going to Blackpool for - well in my estimation anyway.

The first time I heard Barbara Robotham sing was a Verdi Requiem in Liverpool, Maurice Handford and the Liverpool Welsh Choral Union. Must be 25 years ago...

It says in the programme that she's been associated with the choir for nearly 50 years! When newly embarked on a professional singing career she was invited to sing Handel's Messiah with the Society. Apparently her last professional engagement was taking part in Verdi's Requiem, also in the Grand Theatre, to celebrate the choir's 90th Anniversary, ten years ago. She is a professor of music at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and we are therefore able to have some wonderful soloists. She has an impressive list of famous singers that she's taught. We've been lucky to have her. A little funny story here, my dear old mum was at rehearsals and as she was concentrating so hard on the music was a little bit fazed when a lady came up to her and asked if she could share the score as she hadn't brought hers along and was going to sing. Mum, not recognising her said no because she needed to concentrate very hard and would she please go and sit somewhere else. Barbara Robotham has dined out on that experience ever since.

Mary, I have fond memories of the Northern Chamber Orchestra, I was very involved with them before I moved down here.. super players IMHO... glad you enjoyed the concert, sadly I do not know Barbara Robotham, but I will keep a look out for her. A

Andrew Barratt conducted. Local man - very involved with music here and teaches at a local grammar school. The Leader was David Routledge. They were absolutely excellent. I'll give you a complete list the of musicians if you like - see if anyone knows them on here.

It's a bit better weather-wise here today than yesterday when it poured all day. Today is very cool and breezy but no rain yet. Saturday was baking hot - it's unbelievable how it can change. I feel sorry for all those who have descended upon us for the weekend break, but it's good news for the shops/amusements/shows. When they can't sunbathe they get out there and spend. I've got a houseful of happy children and I'm doing them a party-type lunch. They're all going home at 3 (they've been here since 10 a.m.) and maybe we'll go and see Spiderman after that. Happy days.

At the urging of Madame Millicent I have trekked from the Grumps to the Happies Quite exhausting journey, can I have a cuppa? And maybe a Garibaldi biscuit? Now what`s with the tennis, Ian? Have I missed something?
