t-p, may I reccomend the work of james hillman, marian woodman, robert bly. what they do is make the link between poetry-by,extension, musicianship-and ethnic symbolism in a jungian way. this i feel runs deeeper than self-help in that the grit of social and political reality, that s**t happens, is essential to it. bly's writing can be dense but it opens up as you get used to it. the general gist is that personal issues can be looked at mythologically, in the context of ancient and enduring, but not rigid, archetypal stories. Bly is also a poet, azmid a bit of a resugence of interest in th states currently, and he's done a lot of translation of Rumi; Hillman was a therapist, woodman a jungian analyst.
mf - what a coincidence. I had never come across Robert Bly till last week; I'm learning some songs by John Harbison using translations of Mirabai by RB. Not the greatest music, although there are interesting (pre-?)echoes of Tippett - the collective unconscious at work?!

Happiness is :- listening to Rob Cowan playing Mozart, Bach and Scriabin whilst I'm making breakfast for small children. The breakfast "show" this morning has been excellent so far IMHO.

So you missed Vivianne Westwood promoting her Manifesto on Radio 4's "Today" programme, eh Milly? The gist is to be found here.

I never listen to R4 in the mornings - far too depressing. Thanks for the link Bryn. Very imaginative and typically eccentric article but first thing in the morning is not for such surreal mental activity in Millyland. I like to come round gently in the comfort zone of my own little "Country Life" advert. I shall read it again later. Food for thought anyway.

Mind you Milly, did you hear the posthumous violin sonata by Ravel just now.... gorgeous!!! I wish I could buy the music - I would love to play it but I havent found it yet! I play ( most of) the main Ravel sonata and love that one too.

Cheers RM, are you singing or accompanying-or both? Verymuch Tippett territory, isnt it- I think if he'd got involved with this scene over there he'd have had a warm reception. Incidentally, whats your take on Tippett's libretti?

I am so happy because:
Half an hour ago I realised the ring on my finger was not there. My partner gave it to me when we entered our civil partnership after goodness knows how many years, a year ago. The ring meant a lot to me.
I have just looked under some papers beside the laptop, and there it was: it had not fallen down a crack in the floor.

DB, that has to be in the Top 10 of reasons to be happy! I would have been tearing my hair out until I found it. Now you can enjoy the rest of the day.

Hi All, I'm in a good mood today: not at work, lots of shells to sort out, piano to be played, nice cup of coffee about 3 feet away waiting to be drunk and I might even finish a shell article for the shell magazine this afternoon. Good old bank holidays - apparently proposals are afoot for another one in October - sounds good to me!

I've been out in the garden (aka wilderness) and filled two sacks with brambles and sundry weeds so I suppose that has made me slightly happier than yesterday when I had to have the heating on!

Full marks Anna! I opened the kitchen door, got thrown backwards by a local monsoon so closed the door pretty rapidly. Now I`ve had to put the heating on. Again. Gloom gloom. Ooops, sorry, wrong room.
Exits in a determined fashion.

Well, that was too easy - shell article hardly needed any work to finish it off. All I have to do is email it to the editor and it should be published in October! It's blowing a gale here but it does seem to be trying to brighten up. Lynn is in the garden (I'm not terribly keen on gardening, especially when it is cold) putting plants in pots and sorting out the vegetable patch. Think I'll continue my novel this afteroon now that the shell article is done!

It's not too bad here, the strong wind is moving the clouds along and there are more white fluffy ones than dark ones. I've discovered I have a hollyhock which I knew nothing about! And the white irises are just starting to flower.
Yesterday was diabolical, such a shame as we had a two day Regatta :-(
