I'm posting this here because I've just been watching with horror the extent of the flooding in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Gloucestershire....the list goes on.

We're very lucky in this area.  Although it's been belting down with rain for a very long time we have had no serious floods.  I'm the first to complain about windblown sand from the gales as you'll all probably remember - but I have to admit that in this situation, sand is excellent drainage!

So, I'm extremely happy to be fortunate enough not to be so adversely affected by the rainfall.

I enjoyed a lunchtime drink in the local today. The backgound "music" was some unidentifiable Pop song (when is it not?).

I noticed at once the following wonderful aspects of Performance Practice...

a) the solo vocal line moved effortlesslessly in a scale of quarter-tones, and the performer managed actually to embellish the melody without "losing" the quarter-tone scale formation;

b) the quarter-tone scale was immaculately camouflaged within a continuous vibrato that completely filled in the gaps (indeed generously so);

c) the "accompaniment" (on something that was synthesized I suppose) held everything together superbly by providing a kind of primitive-functional-tonal-harmonic support; and

c) there were even some "lyrics" provided by the vocalist (obviously intended to satisfy the whim of a listener who, being of a linguistic analytic bent, might be able to discern [and even perhaps understand] them).

I just consumed my Guinness, totally oblivious to such science. I can only hope that the "effort" was worthwhile.

Baz Huh

Now, can you say the same things in the style of Member Grew?

 GrinMyscha! DFTT! Angry

I do not believe it possible to emulate succesfully The Doctor's literary style - it is far too sophisticated in its use of figurative archaisms (requiring as it does a complete command of numerous ancient languages together with a little German)! It will be necessary to have patience until he bestows upon us another one of his morceaux both to delight and to captivate our senses. We lesser mortals must simply press on with our own meagre mumblings in the hope that what we offer has at least some meaning (however puny this may be).

Milly - I don't know that it makes me happy that there are such terrible floods affecting other people; like you we are wet here, but not (quite) flooded. This morning it isn't raining - yet - but there are black clouds.

The weather is so awful....but I am happy because if I hadn't grasped my opportunity to zip off to Greece a fortnight ago, I would have been on leave last week and this ! That was a lucky escape !

Last night I had supper here:

Watching:

With my lovely man....

It was grey and wild, but we had a window seat, and could watch the waves....there was also a brief period when the sun shone on the grey water....magic ! I'm so happy to be living here.

Janthefan, Are you in Greece now?
I am slow witted as you know so I could not understand. Where is this beautiful place.
The weather here is a little better than yesterday and I am sleepy, but to complain I have to go to Grumpy room.

Jan, its a long time since I've been to Cornwall, but until I read your message I assumed your photos were of Cornwall.  Then I see that the cafe is painted in the colours of the Greek flag. And the beach has no Atlantic breakers.

Hope  you had a lovely time. Smiley

But Don B,

Jan says that she had her meal there last night, and that she's back from Greece. The eaterie really doesn't look very Hellenic, does it? And the clientele does appear rather pale and staid for Mediterranean visitors...

Ho ! It's all true...I've been back from Greece since 15th....it was gorgeous, and did me a power of good vis a vis my unwanted divorce baggage, I went alone, cried, screamed, waved my arms about, grieved, played great music, sunned, swam, etc. etc. Cheaper and more fun than a therapist.

The place I ate last night was the Blue Bar at Porthtowan in Cornwall.....only about 5 miles from my home. It's a cool, hip place to hang out, though we usually only go there in sit outside weather.

Happy ole me xx

It is nice here. May be it is a lttle too cold. Our Greek friends have a house here and usually come here in July to escape the heat.
It is nice a beautiful on both islands during Summer. There are green fields and a lot of interesting historical sites.

Aran Islands (There are three).
