I enjoyed a lunchtime drink in the local today. The backgound "music" was some unidentifiable Pop song (when is it not?).
I noticed at once the following
wonderful aspects of Performance Practice...
a) the solo vocal line moved effortlesslessly in a scale of quarter-tones, and the performer managed actually to
embellish the melody without "losing" the quarter-tone scale formation;
b) the quarter-tone scale was immaculately camouflaged within a continuous
vibrato that completely filled in the gaps (indeed generously so);
c) the "accompaniment" (on something that was synthesized I suppose)
held everything together superbly by providing a kind of primitive-functional-tonal-harmonic support; and
c) there were even some "lyrics" provided by the vocalist (obviously intended to satisfy the whim of a listener who, being of a linguistic analytic bent, might be able to discern [and even perhaps
understand] them).
I just consumed my Guinness, totally oblivious to such science. I can only hope that the "effort" was worthwhile.
