... which explains why, when I tried to ring the Virgin Broadband status line last night to find out what was going on, I got the "number unobtainable" tone

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Welcome back, Moderatrix.
Thanks, Uncle Ron Gosh, it would appear that Virgin got their undergarments in a fair old tussle yesterday.

Hmmm. It might have been helpful if they could have got their act together and not waited over 12 hours before recording a "Whoops, we`ve got a problem" announcement on their Helpl line. As someone pointed out to me earlier today, bet the customers don`t get a refund for loss of service

Mark (whom some of you have met) and I just returned from a friend's place where we were retuning their spinet (Mark did most of it) with the help of Bradley Lehman's very helpful tuning videos (you can find them at www.larips.com or on youtube). Very instructive indeed. And really not bad considering it was the first time either of us had been involved in such an experience.

My Virgin b/band connection was very slow on Sunday but fine by the evening. They did have an announcement to that effect on their service page.
I must admit in all my years with Virgin this is the first time this has ever happened. I find it passing strange that since Morticia has joined the Virgin ranks there has been trouble t'mill <winky emoticom> Must be all this Moderation is putting a strain on the servers .........

I think I will fit right in at the Happy Room this morning.
This morning I managed to wake my seemingly expired ex-laptop (in the manner of Wotan summoning Erda in the third act of Siegfried) for long enough to retrieve onto a USB memory stick not only my Christmas card list (the main point of the exercise) and my catalogue of opera programmes, but also my ENTIRE collection of opera production photos from the last decade.
I think now I can justify sending said ex-laptop back into deepest slumber forever.

Oh - and I got paid. Normal payday is the 26th. However it has come not a moment too soon, as the balance of my current account was down to double figures. I even got a small lump sum that my company's owed me for months.

I am happy because I have had the day off work and achieved a lot of research and got it all into a Word document. I have received an unexpected refund of £200 through overpaying by direct debit my gas bill The second instalment of the excellent Oliver Twist is on shortly. Life ain't bad sometimes!

Here we're about to tuck in to fried anchovies, citrus-braised lamb shanks and Mystery Dessert à la Knoop. I think I'm going to need to moderate my food intake when I get home. But for now I'm telling myself that I was getting a bit skinny and stocking up a little is good for the immune system. The judge's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Anty, we're a day behind you on the Oliver Twist: thanks for your recommendation; I wasn't going to watch it, but I'll record it for later....(When exactly....?)

Oh this MB exceedingly slow, for you in Scotland it starts tonight at 8.00 on BBC1, so far it is the best adaptation I have ever seen, very dark, very edgy and with a cast to die for. Well, Rob Bryden is in it, look you! Timothy Spall is an absolute dream as Fagin.

Just seen your comment about slow MB tonight Anna. It`s taken me mearly 2 hours to get on here this evening. I couldn`t access M&S either. Beeb board was fine so I guess we`ve experienced a wee gremlin in the house.
