As well as the further performance that PW mentioned (on 9 March), last night's performance is being broadcast on R3 in Performance on 3 on 5 Feb, Mort. Smiley

"Loved the growly double-bass bits."

.. which has a thousand times more meaning than many an analytical clap trap.  Can you do reviews please, George?

Tommo

Absolutely! Tell it like it is George  Cheesy, and have pity on those of us who rarely get beyond the 'growly bits' level of music criticism even when needed, and are normally stuck handing out Ferrero Rocher when everyone else is dishing out hand-made Belgian chocolates.

And Mort, if you can't wait that long, it is also available on LA as I write. I have just listened to it and thought it was a lovely piece of music. Very energetic and very poignant.

Oops, sorry Andy.    CheesyTongue Roll Eyes.

Scrub that, Mort! What I have just listened to on LA, was this afternoon's performance of American Rounds by Martin Butler, and not last night's performance!

(Still think it's a lovely piece of music though!)

Martle's not around is he? Perhaps it's safe to confess here that I fell asleep listening to it... Roll Eyes So I'd better LA too!

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

I've just LA'd to the 2.00pm broadcast, greatly enjoyed it Marty  Wink but also it was the first time that I listened to Judith Weir without my attention wavering

I'm not sure MabelJane, but to be frank he's a bit yesterday, I was going to invite him to this year's 'Help Save a Sultana' party, but this Butler guy seems very hot at the moment, and I might ask him instead.  Grin

Would not something along the lines of "Six Flemish Folk-Songs" be more attractive to the discriminating person?

I don't know Sydney, but in this case it would certainly be more misleading to the discriminating person.

Try listening to it. There are some touching moments in it I found, and looking at their photo on the Judith Weir Weekend thread, I see at least The Schubert Ensemble weren't 'tricked out like cowboys'.  Cheesy

I'm listening again, but have also recently heard it on disc (and very fine it is too!  Smiley)

Tom Service just said that it was the first broadcast of the Butler. Can this be true?!

Does anyone else know that feeling when... the composer of a fine new piece that you who have been really impressed with and who has lots of important people to talk to, nonetheless kindly makes time to say hello to you, and you want to say how much you liked it in an intelligently analytical sort of way, and you hear a voice, which turns out to be your own, saying:

"Loved the growly double-bass bits."
Nothing wrong with that Smiley I definitely get that a lot with artists and the like.  If this actually happened to you, what was the composer's response?

To which the composer (I can report since I happened to be standing nearby at the time) replied 'That's my favourite bit!' Lovely to see you George, and tinners too! It means a great deal to composer types when people travel not inconsiderable distances to hear their music.  Kiss

And I have it on good authority that Butler is grateful for all the kind words about the cowboy piece, too. Except for MJ's.  Cheesy  Grin

One person hereabouts would have travelled an even less inconsiderable distance for that concert, had he had even the slightest inkling of it beforehand.... Angry

Ron, promotional chops will be honed for the future.  Embarrassed

There's the March 9th performance, of course...  Wink
