http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoruba_peopleThe music has been preserved in a particular form in both Cuba and Brazil by the descendants of former slaves along with the religion (well, it's probably because of the religion that it survives). In Cuba, the religion has become Santería, and in Brazil it's Candomblé.

Its really strange sometimes, isnt it, with certain situations. I ve never been so happy today. I havnt had the news aboutnthe new healthcare job yet(too early). I might've been involved in burying my ex-motherinlaw and been with her family etc and my ex=wife and her husband, who ursurped me but starngely enough we had a good day out nwith his children and my ex and Sue, my wife, and it all went swimmingly well. Perhaps we had a few beers, might've helped probably!! But still its good that one can get on with a persons ex.
I let you guys know later about my new healtcare job!

The music has been preserved in a particular form in both Cuba and Brazil Tell me more! (The Wiki article seems not to.) I'm all agog. I'm not sure that I can really do it justice. It was a very well prepared presentation and quite thorough. I'll see if she'd mind me emailing you her powerpoint slides. The music that she was talking about accompanies the Orisha possession rituals and involves (principally) three drums (in Nigeria the number varies depending on the different cults, in its diasporic form, it tends to always be three drums) - big (mother), medium (father) and little (child). These drums imitate the tonal Yoruba language and their function in the ritual is to converse with the orisha being summoned. There are also some vocal parts (solo alternating with chorus) which seem to vary in sophistication from place to place (much like Christian worship I suppose). The mother drum is only played by the master drummer. The drums either play static (i.e. fixed) parts or improvise (it's mainly the mother drum that improvises but in full-blown conversations they take it in turns). How's that for a starter?

Following on from hh's happy teaching comments, I'm not sure whether to be here or on the Grump thread. For, happy though it made me in one way to have only four of eight final-year orchestration students show up for their tutorials this afternoon, allowing me time to get other stuff done, it was not, in the bigger picture, A Good Thing to have happened.

Not bad. If there's more, I'm receptive, though.

Another quick visit! Very glad to read that martle's concert went really well. Very happy to report that Little R won 2 silver cups for her singing in a local music festival on Saturday. Also, had very smiley time last night in Buxton Opera House at the I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue show. Has anyone else been to any of the performances during this round-Britain tour? Great to see Humph and co. in the flesh but sadly, Samantha wasn't able to appear.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Mort shakes her head in despair, yet again. Sobs quietly. Trundles off to bed, sighing heavily.
