You've changed your signature, PW!

Indeed I have - I'm currently re-reading E P Thompson's biography of William Morris (one of the great biographies IMHO and, in the days before Amazon, fiendishly difficult to get hold of in the UK - I eventually found my copy in Barnes and Noble on Broadway, where, ironically enough, copies seemed to be spilling off the shelves) and was inspired to replace the old slightly lame Latin BlackBerry joke with something a bit more inspiring.

Hi MJ,
Various sizes - mostly under 10mm and often much smaller.  I have some photos to transfer later so shall post a picture of the smallest ones here then...
Ok here we go:
A general shot first - the box the shells are in is 5cm wide:

So even teenier occupants! You did once reassure me that no creatures were killed to provide you with your shells. Where did all these microshells come from? I once had a necklace of tiny shells but felt bad wearing it as I was sure the owners had been forcibly removed...

[Sorry, this is the Happy Room so I shouldn't be worrying!]

Hi MJ,
PW is right - because of the lightness in weight of the shells, they tend to be seperated out by wind action once cast up on the beach.  There are shell beaches in many parts of the world entirely composed of microshells!

It's not often that I post in this room, but I came back from Henley last night and arrived at my flat, walking into my kitchen I was amazed how clean the place looked. Partly it was due to the fact that I had actually done the washing up before leaving, but partly it was due to the new things I'd bought for the kitchen (with money that I didn't realise I didn't have...) that made it look so nice.

While I was staying with my parents, my eldest brother brought round Season 2 of the X-Files. I am now watching the first episode while thinking of having a shower. Very lazy morning mostly spent in bed. Grabbed a bowl of cereal just now and about to warm up the oven while I shower so that I can have pizza for lunch.

Furthermore, watching this video provides me with more proof that the fact I've only been seeing black and white pictures on this TV is due to the coaxial port rather than anything to do with the signal coming into my flat. Took a video that I'd made here down to my parents and it played in colour! I have two TVs in Durham, one of which I'm planning to bring up here but haven't got round to it... Seems like I should get round to it especially since I can also bring up my desk which will make composition a lot easier (and my chair... mustn't forget my chair...)

So all in all, despite the fact that I have achieved precisely 0 today, I'm feeling quite chirpy today!

Well, you have that first clause in common with me, hh. I was very pleased with myself yesterday for waking up not too long after 9am and having quite a productive day, and I even managed to sit down in the evening and watch one of the DVDs I've bought over the last couple of years and never got round to watching. I then stayed up very late doing some tidying. Today I woke up ridiculously late, probably because I'd had such a long day in the end yesterday, so despite having done nothing very significant yet today I'm not nearly as annoyed with myself as I would be otherwise.

The reason the tidying was necessary was to try and get to the back of the wardrobe and find out how much of a black-tie outfit I still own. I've been invited back to Cambridge this Saturday for a dinner for the tenth anniversary of my matriculation. I don't think I've had to wear black tie since my BA got upgraded to an MA three years ago, and I had a feeling - which turns out to be true - that although I still have a dinner jacket and a white dress shirt I've somehow managed to lose the trousers at some point in a house move or something. (Actually, I think it might have been on a train, though I can't quite explain how that could have happened.)

So I'm just trying on the trousers from my only other suit (which is fortunately also black) to see if they match reasonably well with my dinner jacket. Otherwise I might have to hire a whole suit, which is annoying and which I can't really afford anyway. I also need to find my bow-tie (if I still have it) and my handcuffs cufflinks (was stuck for the word there for a moment Embarrassed). This is all very silly.

replace the old slightly lame Latin BlackBerry joke
Oh, is that what it was? I remember something about 'fructis', but I must admit I never really tried to work out what it all meant.

I had a funny conversation about BlackBerries once, when I was still working in my last job. We had a new managing director, who'd just arrived from the sister company in France, and I walked by his office one day after lunch carrying a box of blackberries which I'd just bought from that nice fruit stall near Holborn tube station, so I thought I should offer him one since he'd seen me taking them through to the kitchen. He took one, and asked me what they were called in English, so I said, 'That's a blackberry', at which point he waved the machine that was in his other hand at me and said, 'But this is a Blackberry.'

I don't think he knew it was named after a fruit, and I still haven't really worked out why it is.
