I used to love browsing the charity shops in the Newmarket area - every now and then I could pick up something really special for pennies.

They're friendly places aren't they, and in a small way your purchase benefits somebody rather than, in the case of the big retailers, licence someone to exploit their suppliers. I once volunteered ina charity shop in Clapham frequented by a Ghanian gentleman who used to buy suitcases of shoes for his 12 (and increasing in number) wives back home. Nice to know also that Milly has had a righteously girlie moment or two today.

I went into a couple of charity shops in Aberystwyth a few weeks ago, and I noticed they both had extremely high-quality (and expensive!) Fair Trade and suchlike foodstuffs on sale (not second hand, obviously I bought some Palestinian olive oil. Delicious.) But since when has this been the case? Anyway, I'm happy today because, for the first time in many, many years, I'm managing to work on two pieces of music at once - and because of deadlines and so on it's completely necessary that I do so! I know other composers don't have a problem with this, but I always have. It's strangely liberating to find I can, for once, switch 'modes' between these pieces, seemingly at will.

Nice one(two) Martle. If I might express some modest solidarity I finished something yesterday afternoon in a library in the east midlands accompanied by snoring vagrants (I was moreorless one myself it has to be said). The thing there was the dynamic between the task and the folk rythmns surrounding it.

I went into a couple of charity shops in Aberystwyth a few weeks ago,
My Aber Oxfam? I worked there from Sep 82 - July 83. Thought of it when tinners was talking about his need for a suit as for some reason we had a large number of dinner-jackets hanging up in the dusty room upstairs. Word got round and I was soon supplying them to impecunious male musicians who needed them for orchestral performances. And well done martle for doing some work! But I really came running into the Happy Room to say JOY OF JOYS!!!!! I've found all my 9 scrapbooks in a dusty old box in the garage! They date back to 1975 and contain all my ROH tickets plus loads of other memorabilia. In the first book there's a note saying that my 1968 Falstaff ticket is missing...but in 1981 I found it! Well, found 2 actually, so I probably sat with my Grandma. June 3rd 1968 (I wasn't quite 8!), £3 17/- in the Orchestra Stalls.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Cool, MJ! (And yes, the Aber Oxfam was where I bought the olive oil! Still there, still musty. I would have said hello to your old workmates if I'd known. )

The city is a process which always veers away from the form envisaged and desired, ... whose revenge upon its architects and planners undoes every dream of mastery. It is [also] one of the sites where Dasein is assigned the impossible task of putting right what can never be put right. - Rob Lapsley

I've just got my usually massive council tax bill, EXCEPT that I have apparenty been overpaying for three years (heaven knows how, but I get reductions for sole occupancy and for payment in full, so I, or they, have been miscalculating) - and
I ONLY OWE THEM £308.17, FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR!!
Provided that you have submitted your council tax return information correctly over that three-year period, it sounds as though your local authority might own you some interest, for which I'd be asking them if I were you; even HMRC pay interest on overpaid tax (though their longstading policy to apply a far lower rate of interest on overpaid tax than that which they do on underpaid and/or overdue tax is just one of a myriad of governmental inequities).
