To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven. A time to weep, and a time to laugh: a time to mourn, and a time to dance

"I always imagine a sheep standing on a sofa shivering and then all of a sudden jumping off" But off what did he imagine me jumping? Topic? This boy, for any interested, became a very enthusiastic musician (it was with him I first realised how quite spectacularly helpful improvising is in opening doors to (and for) pupils abilities/imaginations). When he was about 12 the family upped sticks and moved to Scotland, then a few years ago I got a phone call from the grown-up version of this fellow, and he now writes music for and plays (violin) in a folk band, still pianos keenly, works in radio production, but is now scooting (not literally) round the world with his girlfriend. It's always interesting to hear what's happened to pupils when they're all growed up (and indeed interesting to suddenly find them presenting Radio 3 programmes! )

Had a lovely time at Manchester's Royal Exchange last night watching The Glass Menagerie. All four actors were superb. Brenda Blethyn was a wonderful Amanda, making us laugh one minute and gasp in shocked horror the next. I've never seen it before and had the good luck of being offered the ticket at the last minute as a friend had the bad luck of being ill. My not knowing the story made the second act all the more heart-rending. It's whetted my appetite for more live theatre! Some reviews and pictures here: http://www.royalexchange.co.uk/reviews.asp?playid=266 I've posted this here in The Happy Room since there doesn't seem to be a Plays child-board.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Wow, that's bravely dogmatic of you, martle: I don't think I'd be any more willing to select best playwright than composer for any century. (O'Neill, Beckett, Brecht, Anouilh, Edward Bond and Mamet just for starters.)

I have to admit I haven't seen any other plays by Tennessee Williams - but after this Glass Menagerie I'll be on the look-out for another.

Lightweights. (Ok, Ron, I'll grant you Beckett, but only just. And surely Miller slams him into third place, now I come to think of it? )

Not even Cat on a Hot Tin Roof? I don't think it's tin but it's the closest I could find.
