I was at a parents' meeting with some of the Year 8 English teachers at my children's high school this evening and couldn't believe my ears when I heard the following from one of the Deputy Heads:

"This is the first time we have had this kind of meeting so it will go down in the anals of history."   Shocked Shocked Shocked  Grin Grin Grin

No one else seemed to notice - I didn't hear any tittering!

Honestly!  You don't expect a deputy head to give a bum speech!

Speaking of, er, tongue slips... apparently Klaus Thunemann (a reasonably famous German bassoonist) was giving a masterclass. A student was depressing her A flat key when she shouldn't have and that was spoiling intonation or tone-colour or something. The German for A flat is of course As. So one should only have expected him to point out, as indeed he did, that the reason it wasn't working was because "your As-hole is open".

Nonetheless I'm told a certain amount of hilarity ensued.

Yes, we do, bbm, but the question needs to be asked whether you ever bother to preview your posts before sending them out. If you paid that little attention to the arrangements you do, then there'd be such a welter of fudged accidentals in the transposed parts that they would sound ridiculous, so I'm guessing that you're more careful with those. Do your readers here deserve any less courtesy?

Me too, Milly Grin.

Ron, I think you're being a bit of a spoilsport. Think of the contribution to the Glossary thread.

Mary, I'm sure the odd bbmism will still slip out, but we seem to have reached the point where virtually everything he spouts goes straight into the Glossary.... (We have very regular posters here for whom English isn't even their native tongue (an obvious example being Pim) who manage far better.)

You do have to take into account that some people may be dyslexic or have other less serious difficulties.

Education isn't what it was either.  I used to regularly see my step-grandson's English homework go uncorrected and tried in vain to teach him not to say would of, could of etc.  He just couldn't get it and the school made no attempt to improve the situation.  Sadly, standards have fallen and it isn't always the fault of the pupil.
