Visiting my sister has made me realise how addictive the web is, i used to not have the web at home, i must say, it can be addictive, do you think your an addict and do you have an action plan to ensure you spend more time away from screens or are you 'loving it' ?

If me and mrsBBM are on holiday in this country, we take our lap top with us. So I guess we are.

There is no doubt that it seems to be compulsive. I used to take in legal work at home so I was on the computer working a lot. I suppose it gradually just took hold.
All the same, when we went on holiday for two weeks, I didn't miss it at all. I don't have a laptop, but there were "cyber" facilities on the ship if I'd wanted to use them. I didn't go online once.
At home it's a different matter though. I think it might just be habit now. I log on in the mornings as usual, even though I don't have to. I used to work sometimes during the night and if I wake up in the night I still make my way in here to log on and see if anything is happening.

But does she ever get the chance to use it, bbm?

There's a definite disadvantage to having web access at work. After getting used to dropping into web sites (mostly forums) on a regular basis during my quiet moments, it has become very difficult to discipline myself not to when I'm really busy. And I have found that the only way to concentrate on writing at home is to unplug the network cable and take my laptop into another room! Yes, I think I'm an addict

Last night at 11pm, after Miriam had gone down for the night, Ms R-J and I were both sat on the sofa with our respective laptops, checking forums and emails. Put me down for a yes then.

And I have found that the only way to concentrate on writing at home is to unplug the network cable and take my laptop into another room! I do find it difficult not to pop in here or somewhere similar for regular 'breaks' when I'm working on the computer. Like you, if I'm actually writing then I have to somehow convince myself the internet doesn't exist for a few hours at a time while I get any proper thinking and drafting done. (Walks and showers are good for thinking, but I always draft at the computer and this requires going to another room or turning off the wireless switch.) In that sense it was easier when worked in an office and did emails/internet there, and didn't have an internet connection at home, but like you, I found that as a result my office hours were rarely free of temptation. It was never a problem when I worked in retail, but I wasn't a member of any internet forums then, and also that was before I used to do freelance work and feel the need to check email on a regular basis ...

No. Definitely not an addict. I can stop any time my ISP cuts off the service for non-payment of bills.

Of course I can quit any time I want. Why, 15 minutes ago I shut the PC down, no problems whatsoever, though I've had to log onto the laptop to tell you that

Yes, I think I am. I wouldn't be here at this hour if I wasn't, would I? I'm not ashamed of it, though. I think it's the most wonderful invention since printing, and I love "talking" to people I'd never have met in real life. I love being able to find things out easily, read reviews from all over the world, and (whisper it) being able to buy all sorts of things I'd never have thought of otherwise

Noticed a lot of laptops on the train yesterday, free wireless connection with the train firm, emails, chat, people buying half bottles of wine, cor, the train really can be the office/home. I suppose the web is like all things, has a good and bad side, i have a little ocd thing going on so have to watch myself. ocd is common with musicians as well.....
