Good heavens, I knew nothing about that! It's generating a fair amount of discussion though, which is encouraging. It would be a real shame if it closed, but I can sort of see why it's happening. People are right that the car parking around there has all but disappeared. I used to walk round the back of it to go to life drawing classes and the former car park at the back was usually heaving with entirely theatre-goers, but the multi storey was demolished as it was unsafe and they didn't put anything in its place.
However, concerning this comment:
Perhaps they should consider mixing the plays and more worthy stuff with a few more comedians and populist shows? There has to be a way of making it work financially.
I couldn't disagree more. In my experience, 90% of their listings are "popular" stuff (aka dreadful)and the Drill Hall is winning hands down on quality but it's a flat venue and it doesn't have anything like the atmosphere of a real theatre.
