There's no place like home

« on: 10:05:44, 29-10-2008 »

As promised to a handful of people, I wandered out with the camera yesterday morning and after work and took a few photos.

This is the cathedral from Westgate car park, with the castle wall on the right.

A bit closer...

Stanley, this is the view along Westgate looking north west.  I thought your old place might have been along there but there isn't really anything big enough to have "wings".

So I thought it might have been a former incarnation of this instead...

?

Anyway, 2 of you will recognise this:

It's got to be one of the easiest-to-miss theatres in the UK.  It's the only theatre in Lincoln now though.  I was looking through some archives in the Library last night and noted at least 2 more in the 50s - I'm afraid 1962 seemed to be the year all the photographers lost their cameras. One of the old theatres is now Primark...  Sad

This is up the side.  No idea where the stage door is, but this looked like a likely contender.

Back to more general Lincoln...
This is the view on my drive to work of a morning (poor me  Cheesy)

And this is part of my journey home.  It's only a 15 minute commute.  Smiley

I've got a few more round Westgate if I've not got the right bit Stanley.

Milly - I think I mentioned the music library on the Brayford in an earlier post.  While browsing through stuff in the library last night it turned out that it didn't start off as a library, it was designed as a motor show room!  Rather makes more sense for the design.  Here's a photo of it from 1959:

It's that strange concrete triangular bit on the left that's distinctive.

What lovely photos, Ruby! Lincoln is a beautiful place, though parts of it do require good climbing skills - or at least good fitness levels.

That's annoying, the picture is blocked.  All sorts of random stuff gets blocked from here.  Angry

Is it the imp?  Smiley

It's because it's a work PC - all sorts of sites are blocked.

I've not seen the imp for a while now.  Sadly the cathedral has started charging to get in properly - you can go inside but only as far as a cordon.  Plus I always forget where it is.  I know it's right at the back on the left somewhere...   Smiley

[edit - I can see him now!  Peculiar computer...]

Sob.  Cry

Oh the nostalgia!

I have some pics but for some reason my computer won't allow them to be uploaded on to photobucket.

Great pictures, Ruby. Thank you. Smiley

It [The Theatre Royal] is the only theatre in Lincoln now though.

I may have missed this being mentioned before but it looks as if it is in serious peril of closure too. Sad

Good heavens, I knew nothing about that!  It's generating a fair amount of discussion though, which is encouraging.  It would be a real shame if it closed, but I can sort of see why it's happening.  People are right that the car parking around there has all but disappeared.  I used to walk round the back of it to go to life drawing classes and the former car park at the back was usually heaving with entirely theatre-goers, but the multi storey was demolished as it was unsafe and they didn't put anything in its place.

However, concerning this comment:

Quote
Perhaps they should consider mixing the plays and more worthy stuff with a few more comedians and populist shows? There has to be a way of making it work financially.

I couldn't disagree more.  In my experience, 90% of their listings are "popular" stuff (aka dreadful)and the Drill Hall is winning hands down on quality but it's a flat venue and it doesn't have anything like the atmosphere of a real theatre.

But really - look:

Love that last one Milly!  Looking very foxy  Wink

I've got pictures at home that are pretty much identical to the two of the cathedral exterior.  The only thing that's changed is that they've cleaned the front.  It was hidden under scaffolding from the time I moved here until only a couple of years ago, so it's a lot lighter now.

If I remember I'll bring them in tomorrow.  Smiley

I love your second picture Ruby, with that hazy light. Could almost have been painted by Turner!
