Having noticed a few unanswered questions about boilers in The Happy Room, maybe this will fulfill a need.
My own Vaillant boiler needs the heating turned on for the hot water to happen. I'm in denial of course, because I don't want to pay for some chap to come over and (possibly) do something simple for loads o' money. On the the other hand, I just know that on the coldest, darkest day just before Xmas . . .

Ha!  You think  you got problems!  Me boiler is totally fecked, me cowl got blown off off in a hurricane and the rain entered down the flue.  Hence, I have no heating at the mo except for a dismal halogen heater.

My hot water is by immesion

Brrr!  Shades of a Child's Chistmas in Wales and chucking snowballs at the cats for amusement I think.

My boiler is far too old to have a manual, and I don't offhand know what make it is. It was totally reliable until last May, when (suspiciously just after it had been serviced) the pilot light went funny, and now I never know whether it's going to work or not. Every morning I lie in bed and listen for the reassuring noises that mean it's working.

I dread having to get a new boiler, because (as well as the expense and the upheaval) modern ones seem so incredibly complicated. Changing the timer on mine involves turning a little wheel until the arrow points to the right numbers, not a sort of mini-computer.

Worcester Bosch 280i Combi Boiler

Woke up, felt cold.
Snuggled under Duvet a bit more.
Eventually had to get up, feet froze.
Wondered why the radiators weren't on.
Checked the Battery Powered Remote Thermostatic Temperature Control Thingumy in the kitchen.  Seemed to be working, as the digital display was showing 15o, but went to 20o with a flame when I pressed the 'Warm up' + button.
Realised some time later I was still cold
Inspected the boiler in the bathroom and found it wasn't making a noise.
Fiddled around a bit and couldn't see what was wrong.
Went and got the Battery Powered Remote Thermostatic Temperature Control Thingumy and pointed it at the boiler from a distance of 1 ft.
Ping! Boiler sprang into action.
Went to get new batteries.  Changed them.  All fine.

MORAL:  Stupid Design means you think your remote control is talking to your boiler because it tells you it is, but really it's voice is so feeble it couldn't excite an iron.  Make sure you have lot of spare batteries and try them first.

My Potterton Combi boiler does exactly the same, and despite the fact that I reported it to the landlord ten months ago, I'm still waiting for it to be fixed.

I had a look at mine tonight to see what make it is, since everyone else seems familiar with simple facts like that. It says "Baxi" quite clearly on the front, but I'd never noticed.

a couple of years ago our boiler -- hot water and all heating -- packed in on CHRISTMAS EVE  Shocked

After several frantic calls, we finally found a man who was willing to come and take a look at it. He arrived slightly... merry... having been celebrating the season, but he did a great job of fixing it with a couple of matchsticks (I'm not kidding) and it kept running all aver Christmas.

We gave him a big tip Smiley
