Peer Review? Argghhh! Another abomination.
That would be the nasty kind of abomination, as opposed to the pleasant kind, I assume, Mort.

PS Mort - couldn't agree more with your carp and billhooks assessment of appraisals.

Let us get on with our jobs, cut out Inhuman Remains except for the things where they are there to help and defend us against the Evil Ones at the top... Any one else here have Peer Review? Another load of old clobbers... that's where they give a colleague and (former) friend the loaded gun instead of doing the business themselves...

At our place, we have a "capability framework" that we get measured against  (yeah, my ar*e we do).  Of course, these are accompanied by capability programmes - but only for the most capable of people.  Wink

At the end of each year there is a "Raising People Capability and Performance Review Process".  I quote:
Quote
'It's about developing a distinct, sustainable and uncompromising performance culture. It will help managers create plans for their grades 3, 4 and 5 that are as effective as their wider business plans.'
  (Ah, not very effective then....)

At these meetings you have to set yourself SMART objectives.  SMART = Specific Measurable Agreed Relevant and Time-Bound, (not Stupid Monkey-Activity-Related Tasks)

And you have to give yourself a ranking at the end of the year  (careful how you say that) for your boss to override  (after all he has to justify his position by doing something!)

People are also assessed for their 'Learning Agility'.  (Oh God please let it stop!)

And we don't have training any more.  Instead you 'Go on to Learning Space' - an online mishmash of jumbled and uninformative words that is about as near to good training as a cow pat.

Speaking of which, I can smell something coming from my computer.....

Tommo, that sounds dreadful!
Do you have 360 degree apparaisals as well?  At my old place, we used to and it meant that, thanks to a little ******** (insert here the rudest name you can think of, irrespective of the number of letters) who personally didn't like me (I don't know why) I got a very poor pay rise.
Still, none of that management *ull*hit type stuff here!  Good.  Smiley

Re the appraisal, what got me so mad was the fact I was appraised by a Partner who is not attached to our office, who I see maybe once a year, who patently didn't know what I do but had been fed a load of bull from someone who is undermining me.

For example, he asked why I didn't design the agricultural brochures to which I replied that I couldn't because my computer was so old and feeble it couldn't handle the software.  To which he replied 'I didn't know that'  No, of course he didn't know because a certain person had omitted to tell him in her tittle-tattling and her desire to decrease her workload and push it on to someone else.  Never mind the fact that I have been asking for a new computer for years. 'I didn't know that' was his reply.

The result was that I am getting a new machine.  And a pathetic pay increase.  And an increased workload.  And I'm watching her.

Grumpy - me?  You bet I am.  Still, it's Friday, there's plenty of good music on the shelves and I am off to chop up some vegetables whilst imagining it's a certain someone .........

Anna, I find the Dies Irae from Verdi's Requiem priceless for these sort of moments. Staff know better than to enter my classroom early in the morning when they hear this blaring out!!  Indded, a few years ago I told my Yr 5/6 class that if they ever heard me playing this, it would be best to keep their heads down - I never had occasion to put it on that year, but when a similarly volatile piece was spinning one day, one girl entered nervously and asked, 'Are you in a bad mood today?' Shocked

Well you've got me there Mark, I don't think I own a single work by Verdi.  Wouldn't a Dies Irae reduce you to sobs and rather worsen the situation?

Having listened IGI I see what you mean.  I think I may trawl the Net tomorrow for it.  Would it be the Elliot Gardner that you recommend?

Now there's a question! I'm sure many here will have their favourite version of the Verdi Requiem. JEG's version is very good indeed - the only period instrument performance, I think. Another which I could recommend would be Abbado's most recent version:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Verdi-Requiem-Giuseppe/dp/B00005MG6F/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/202-5913406-5145461?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1180723913&sr=8-1

I don't know the older DG Fricsay recording, but the Penguin guide and others have praised it highly and it comes very reasonably priced:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Verdi-Requiem-Giuseppe/dp/B000001GQU/ref=sr_1_13/202-5913406-5145461?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1180724078&sr=1-13

I'm sure others will recommend their own favourites to help, or hinder(!) your decision!

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of Sgt Pepper, the Sun decided to update the cover art, replacing those featured with figures more relevant to today. Stockhausen was repleced by Moby.

I bought a cassette of Sergeant Pepper a long time ago and I couldn't understand why there was a burst of gibberish at the end of side 2. I wondered whether I'd bought a pirate copy and someone had simply taped over a previous recording, so I blocked up the protection hole and erased it.

And who the hell is Moby?

Tony,
This is exactly my feelings. Apparently Beatles liked experimental music and included it in their album.

I had to google to find out who Moby was. Now I know (sort of).

Stockhausen is fifth from the left on the back row, for those of you who like to know these things. Moreover, right next to him, is our very own Offbeat!
