Yes tinners. George, dubious musicians and other questionable types (Qui, moi?) insist on knowing if you intend to frequent a Kings Cross ale house this coming Wednesday. I will bring a small sachet of mud, bearing the hoof prints of Milly and Mort, for you to gaze at in misty eyed rememberance. Grin

Ooops, I`m off topic. I`ll hasten to the Meeting Up thread.

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Well, my computer crashed so I frantically ( with help of course!!) started it in safe mode ( eventually) and saved ... I thought... my itunes and photos on my external hard drive. I have a 30gb ipod vidoe about 20g full and a shuffle. I put my shuffle in and it wiped. My feller worked out how to get this back - all is now there but in the wrong order so even putting 1g in the right order ( the '48' for example!) took ages. I also have several books on my ipod and these come up as track 1, 2, 3 etc . I presume all would be muddled if I put my ipod in , and the tracks of my books would be absolutely entangled... so I am going to use it as a sort of static library and I think I may get a nano for 'daily new stuff' If you see what I mean.

I am , I have to say a bit confused... this happened once before when I changed comps, I answered 'yes' instead of no.... etc... and wiped all my itunes then too!!!

Ah well, still a bit of a grump , but a bit more of a resigned grump now !!

Yes - John Redwood! He has indeed urged the Tories to abolish Inheritance Tax. Good thinking (we ask ourselves, especially since a lot of us now own houses that have risen invalue above the IT threshold without anyone having raised the threshold for IT to compensate!). But WAIT....(!)

In the same report John Redwood has "come up" with a way to address congestion on commuter trains: a) double the number of trains, and b) to enable them to start and stop more quickly (because the numbers have been doubled) they will need to be fitted with RUBBER WHEELSGrin Grin Grin  Huh Huh Huh  Sad Sad Sad

Not quite true. The threshold was raised in April of this year from £285000 to £300000, but it doesn't seem to be rising as quickly as house prices.

With respect, it IS true. A recent rise of £15000 is quite insufficient and far too late! 25 years ago, it was still the case that Inheritance Tax was aimed only at those whose assets were way above those of middle-income folks. (This is why all those Country Estates had to be sold off, or demolished, because the inheritors could not afford otherwise to pay the tax levied upon them.) In more recent years, however, IT has (it seems intentionally) come to affect more and more "ordinary folk" who have become victims to rises in the market value of their property. Little has been done in policy terms to address this, and the Chancellor has been content to benefit from the windfall.

The average price of a "normal" house anywhere in England will soon exceed £300,000, whereas 25 years ago it was well below £50,000. This represents a 6-fold increase on average, so the fact that the IT threshold has not similarly been raised 6-fold can only mean that it has become a governmental policy decision to cause the IT entrapment now to affect persons whose assets - far from being well above the average - are now only very slightly (if at all) above the norm.

I can't see them abolishing it.  It raises far too much revenue for them.  Those in the higher tax brackets are paying 40% on their earnings and 40% on their savings.  If they have more than one property and sell it they are taxed 40% capital gains and then when they die, after the £230,000.00 limit, they're taxed 40% again on the same assets with Inheritance Tax.  It's one thing to pay higher rate tax all your life on what you earn.  Ok - that's taken for granted -  but to be taxed all over again when you're dead for the same amount is disgusting.  People's families are penalised - they have to pay the IT before they can take any assets that remain and sometimes this means they have to sell their own homes to pay the IT before they can have what has been bequeathed to them.  It sometimes means they're worse off.  What is the point in working all your life to build up assets for your family - only to have it drained by the Government to pay for stuff like war in Iraq?  It's a disgrace.
