So soon we'll have to put up with people saying

"I'm on the plane"

Another part of the modern world invaded by inanity.   Huh

Bit of a double whammy there, stuck on the runway and with a massive phone bill.

Oh grump, grump, bugler, grump.

I know this isn't the end of the world and I am keeping it in perspective. But water has found its way through the roof and has got as far as dripping through the middle of the bedroom ceiling. Oh ... despairing bother, bother, bother. I've a feeling this is all going to get complicated, messy and probably costly. Could have done without it.

Sorry, my contribution to saving the depressed nation and the world from itself may have to be put on hold while I try and sort this lot out. Does anyone know how to tell the difference in advance between a wonderful helpful roof contractor who knows what they are doing and a cowboy who will rip you off? I know there are admirable ones out there as well as the ones who unfairly give the whole profession a bad reputation, but how do you identify them?  Oh God, and I'm sorry for using cowboy as a term of disapprobation too. I'm sure most cowboys are wonderful at their job. I just want someone who will do whatever is necessary to repair my roof at a reasonable price for both of us. (Probably a ceiling plasterer as well Sad )

Some local authorities have "trusted traders" schemes - might be worth checking out the local council website.

Oh, how I sympathise! Any domestic disaster is so deadly boring, and has to be dealt with, taking precious time and money, both of which could be used so much more pleasurably.

I've never found the answer to this myself, but I suspect the best thing would be personal recommendation.

Yes, if you know any neighbours who have had good roof work done then ask them who they used. We've tended to do that for any home work done.

Not our roof yet, though this house has 'fascias' that go round under the gutter etc (what do they do??) and they are wooden and starting to look cracked and knackered.

George, so sorry to hear about that.  When I lost part of my bathroom roof due to the tail end of a hurricane I'm pretty sure my insurance company supplied a list of recommended repairers.  Worth a look to see if your insurers do the same?

George, I am just ringing my friend in St. Albans to see if she can recommend anyone. Will let you know.

Right - just got off the phone, but unfortunately she can't recommend a roofer which is presumably what you need.  She says she's not surprised you've got water pouring in because it's bucketing down. She says if it's a pipe she can recommend a plumber but it doesn't sound as though that's what you're after.

Have you been up in the loft for a look?  It's probably a tile or so missing or loose - you might be able to patch it up for now from the inside, then contact your insurers for a local list of workmen that they would recommend.

Yet again the MB is acting unresponsively and slow, is it more routine maintenance or other problems?  Do we need to put another 50p in the meter?

Thanks all for both sympathy and helpful advice about the roof leak.

Very helpful thought about the Local Authority 'Trusted' or 'Assured Trader' schemes, pw, but unfortunately neither Snorbans nor Herts Councils have got one up and running yet (I discover). It looks as if, in lieu of that, this thing www.trustmark.org.uk is the nearest national equivalent and, although it still seems to be in its infancy, looks a generally GOOD THING. Anyway, I seem to have picked up on my googling travels that the thing to do is to choose someone who is a member of the National Federation of Roofing Contractors. I've got a list of local-ish ones and will ring round after the Bank Holiday no doubt to put myself on the long waiting list of all the others whose roofs (rooves?) had their weak spots revealed by the downpour.

Yes, I've been up in the loft, Milly, and found where it was coming in. Got a bucket sitting under it now. No obvious signs like a broken or slipped tile so I think I'll leave it at that for the time being. It also looks from the mess on the loft insulation that it might not be a new thing but it was only today that it came in fast enough to come through the ceiling below. I just know what would happen if I start trying to move slates around on a Bank Holiday Sunday ...

Thanks all. I suppose I'd best just wait until Tuesday now, emptying the bucket if necessary, and stand stern guard against self pity.

Is anyone else having dreadful break-ups when using LA to listen to last night's TTN? It's not the usual buffering, because the clock just keeps on ticking steadily away. No, loads of gaps in the music right from the start, not even the theme tune or the presenter escapes.

I only replied to this because there were no reply buttons but only a quote button in other threads.

Surely Mods, this MB is so unstable, can you think about moving it to a new Server?
