What musical tastes does anyone here have that seem utterly uncharacteristic of them, or even possibly they wouldn't always admit to? I know of one poster to this board (who will remain nameless) who has a secret love for the Carpenters, which would be the last thing you might imagine. I have a fondness for such works as the Saint-Saens Fifth Piano Concerto, for Leoncavallo I Pagliacci, or for the Moeran Violin Concerto, as well as much of the soundtrack for Calamity Jane. What about anyone else?

I have a lot of love for the Carpenters too, but since Sonic Youth came out as big fans years ago and blessed them with hipster cool, I'm not sure that that's a guilty pleasure any more.

I might also add a fondness for the albums Wardance and Electric Savage by Colosseum II, in particular for the two slow numbers on each album, 'Rivers' and 'Castles' (with that inimitable voice of Gary Moore). And the Michael Andrews/Gary Jules version of 'Mad World' (though after finding that used to auto-play on a [edit: silly party] blog, now I'm horrified!). That should raise the stakes pretty high. Hadn't thought about that sort of designer naff retro cool coming into play with the Carpenters, TRJ!

I don't suppose a huge love of Motown is that guilty or unusual, but it's the slushy ones ('I hear a symphony', 'If I were a carpenter', etc) that get me as much as the up-tempo ones.
I might add Jimmy Somerville as well. In a different vein, I'm never sure I should enjoy the likes of Chas Smith, Daniel Lentz and Harold Budd as much as I do... A general tendency towards the kitsch, I suppose.
That's my cupboard bared (for now) - someone else's turn...

Ho! I have a guilty liking for The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Maureen McGovern, Peter Skellern, Spike Jones, The Gipsy Kings, Maria M. Meija, Vitkovak Wind Orchestra and Les Barker. Some of my "classical" likings are also a bit distant and "guilty". Cheers

Eric Coates and other gems of British Light Music... (but it has to be the genuine article, never could bear Malcolm Arnold); G & S... minor 19th century ballet composers...
I have a large stock of brown paper bags and a coat with a turned-up collar for when I make such purchases.
Oh, and on a really bad day, a bit of S & G (Sounds of Silence et al)

Nothing wrong with the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band!
How about guilty un-pleasures? I feel more ashamed about the fact that I can't get into any of the following:

Well, since we are here at this meeting of Musicoholics Anonymous.... and everything we say here is confidential... I'll admit to liking...

I might as well own up to being the Carpenters fan Ian mentioned at the beginning of this thread, but perhaps I should also mention that it was Ian who performed an impromptu piano transcription of "Yesterday Once More" (or was it "Close To You") in my presence.
Bonzo Dog Band: oh yes. Comedian Harmonists (obviously: "Veronika, der Lenz ist da!") Cocteau Twins and I suppose this is where I should mention the unreconstructed exoticists Sorabji and Koechlin...
I could no doubt think of many more inappropriate tastes, but I have to get that plane to Basel now!

I love the early Elvis Presley movies and old musicals How about guilty un-pleasures? I feel more ashamed about the fact that I can't get into any of the following:
Haydn - anything except the choral works.

I forget to mention being a lifelong Elvis Costello fan (with the exception of "Il Sogno"), and another Bonzo Dog enthusiast too.

In my foolish youth I once went to an AC/DC concert. Two days later I went to see a relative sing in The Dream of Gerontius. Couldn't hear a thing.
