No. IGI, you must jest.  You did not knock up some St. Delia's M&S's 75% Brazilian Mince (with added sugar, salt and modified cornflour) and then cook it for hours?

Tell me this is not true <hearty sob emoticom>

Shocked  No, this was from one of Delia's 'proper' cookbooks (the Winter one): 400g each of beef and pork mince, pancetta, chicken livers, onions, garlic, passata (instead of the tinned tomatoes), fresh basil, red wine, mushrooms. Yum!

Just the washing up to do now.  Sad

Tomorrow...triple chocolate brownies!  Cheesy

Oooo, that's reminded me of a Robert Carrier recipe for Ragu sauce that used minced pork. It was gorgeous <swoon> Bet you I can't find it now Cry

This week I was on shopping duty and went to the Farmers' Market.  I bought some nettles and preparing them was a whole sight easier.  We have just incorporated some with spinach to have with rice and veal stew.  Muscadet and Julienas, which is why I probably shouldn't be posting at this time of the evening.

Hick.

Cheers.

Don't worry your Daily Mail-reading head, Don. You wouldn't be the first not unduly sober person to post here.  Roll Eyes

I trust you can recognise irony when you see it, martle.

I have no shame at having drunk far more wine that is good for me, but I would want to curl up with embarrassment if it was ever known I had spent good money on supporting The Daily Mail.  Or indeed The Daily Telegraph.  (Although if there is a free copy of the DT in Starbucks and the only alternative is Metro, I have been known to peruse it.)

Martle has read my entry in the Avatars thread.

My initial reservations about the amount of salt contained in Delia's 'Instant Meals' seem to have been confirmed in some recipes

I suspect Delia is going to very much regret this latest effort. In a recent post by Reiner on News and Current Affairs (not about DS!) there was a link to an article in The Times about her. It suggested that she has been badly miscast. That, I think. is fair enough. Whoever thought it was a good idea to attempt to 'sex up' the Delia 'product' by showing her lifestyle, a la Nigella, got it very wrong. That's one thing, but the flogging of instant food products, likely to be loaded with all sorts of additives, in a time when people are becoming more conscious of what goes into their food, seems tantamount to reputation suicide.  Those who cannot afford the 'top-of-the-range' products that she is advocating will choose the cheaper option - 17pence tinned mince and a packet of Smash. After all, Delia has announced that she is 'very excited about tinned meat'.  I can't see any winners here. Apart from the obvious ones .... Angry

I've never been a Delia Disciple so there should be no reason for me to feel teed off about this. But I am.

Anyway, how long does it take to make a Puttanesca sauce for Gawds sake? Roll Eyes

I think the manufacturers of packets etc rely on the 'emperor's new clothes effect,; the illusion of being cooked for by someone anonymous (as one who made Mr Kiplings Cakes etc I've seen how cheerless the process is), and the illusion of convenience. Delia is in the panglossioan world of professional soccer and I think her target audience is of soccer WAGs,whom in a slightly dated she presumes to be general role models. But look at the freesheets dished out in Lunnon ,even yer Fay Maschler, and you see food as competitive sport, bling, aspiration-anything but just Food. That's where subversive channels like this one refresh the sense of possibility, for when someone like me can actually get to a kitchen.

Much as I hate to say this, I am currently watching Delia and the recipes she's done so far tonight look delicious!  A much higher standard and less "cheaty" than the other programmes I've seen in the series.

Am I alone in not considering ready-made pastry tart cases to be "cheating", particularly?

In my opinion, they're usually fine, thought they don't tend to have the flavour of home-made.

I'be almost forgotten how to make pastry, because I never do now, so perhaps I'll try one.

Ready made pastry? Wonderful! My mother didn't have a problem with it. Neither do I. I can manage pastry crumbs for fruit crumble though Grin
