Just back, flushed and hungry from a particularly invigorating Evensong, and am about to tuck into some R3OK-inspired carrot, red pepper, tomato and marjoram soup thickened with potato and, at RB's excellent suggestion, half a peck of pearl bailey barley to give it gravitas, served nestling enticingly ..., er, in a bowl.

I'm on strike tonight. So tired! All this wonderful food has made me hungry but I'm opting for the easy option and am just about to ring for a Chinese takeaway. What a blissful thought - all cooked, delicious and delivered to my door - the only washing up being the plates. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Oh dear, I think that must have happened during the 'whazzing it all up' stage. The Black and Decker paint-stirring attachment I was using in lieu of a Kitchen Goddess Whazzer was rather more powerful than I was expecting.

Oh dear. Well, these things can happen. As you may be aware, I do actually know someone with three; I can ask him if he can spare one if you're interested.

The city is a process which always veers away from the form envisaged and desired, ... whose revenge upon its architects and planners undoes every dream of mastery. It is [also] one of the sites where Dasein is assigned the impossible task of putting right what can never be put right. - Rob Lapsley

And so to the meatballs. That's right, the ones I've been promising myself I'd make all week. A mouthwatering and utterly authentic-sounding southern Italian recipe fom the pen of goddess Marcella Hazan, involving bread mushed in milk, egg, parmesan, parsley, marjoram and a breadcrumb coating, with a simple tomato sauce. Oh boy. Oh boy oh boy. St Nigel has a recipe in today's Observer for pork and lemon meatballs: http://lifeandhealth.guardian.co.uk/food/story/0,,2272310,00.html

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Thanks for the tip-off, pw. It looks a doozy, doesn't it? There's always just one little detail from left field in St. Nige's recipes, in this case the anchovies. I can see more meatballs on the martle kitchen horizon.
(Last night's were fabbo, by the way, and enough left over for a supper later on tonight.) Nx3

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

I quite fancied the meatballs with the grated beetroot from our Nige ... But don't have a Kitchen Goddess grating gadget.
Having roasted mediterreanean style vegetables tonight - onion, mixed peppers, courgettes, cherry tomatoes, etc., hint of rosemary, and I thought when it was done I would strew some goats cheese on top and whizz it under the grill to melt down into the veggies. Served with garlic bread. I think that will work quite nicely. Cheap as well!!
