Cooked myself good big lunch today, so got take-out out from a veggie place in town for dinner. This really should go in the rant room, but I HATE surprise celery!

What was so surprising about it?!!

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

What was so surprising about it?!! What was so surprising about it? It was unexpected that's what was surprising about it! I really don't like celery very much, but I can bring myself to eat it, though I must prepare myself mentally prior to carrying out such actions. Oh...man...getting sleepy...mm...digestion...

Even if I weren't a veggie, this is one restaurant that I'd steer well clear of! Wonder if they serve coq au vin. Sorry, I'll get me coat.

Doesn't sound any worse than the stuff these modern health-food stores try to sell you (ok...maybe a *little* worse, but they both utilize about the same amount of quackery).
Fried up some pumpkin seeds today with some red peppers and chopped up bits of pork, put together with couscous and pesto. Quite nice. Had completely forgot that pumpkin seeds are delicious when toasted : )

Tonight: globe artichoke and lasagne (mushrooms, spinach, pine nuts, tomato sauce, a few lentils)
I may harvest one of my brocolli heads this weekend!

Tonight: grilled chicken thigh with balsamic butter (Nigel Slater) with homemade chips (Gordon Ramsay) and curly kale and brocolli
Tomorrow: chickpea + spinach curry thing (probably made-up on the spot)

What's that burning?
Just as long as it's not the inside of your washing machine, hh.
On the GNER train down on Thursday I treated myself to a serving of their Beef Sausages and Horseradish Mash, which was pretty wonderful and went a long way towards making me more philosophical about the horrendous delay...

Ron!
Are you trying to say they now serve edible food on the trains in this country? That makes me very happy. Maybe it was a shrewd move to take "customers'" minds off the inefficiency of the service, in which case it seems to work.

First the good news: GNER has consistently outshone the other rail companies in the quality of its service, not only on the catering front but also in the quality of its overall on-board staff. Now the bad news: GNER have been stipped of their franchise: the bid that they made for a second ten-year term, against stiff competition from the likes of Virgin, had to be extremely high: subsequent downturns in revenue post 7/7 and increased costs for electricity have made it impossible for them to meet the high repayments. At present there is an interregnum with GNER still responsible for management. Eventually the franchise will go to another company, most likely Virgin or First, neither of which can offer anything to write home about on the catering front whatsoever. A very sad indictment of the franchise system and the crazy way privatisation was handled. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2006/12/15/bcngner15.xml

Until privatisation, you could procure the best bacon buttie I (still) have ever had in the buffet car of the London-Brighton express trains. They were so popular that the whole carriage, and beyond, whiffed wonderfully.
