Waitrose tend to pay their suppliers a higher premium for their produce than do the other supermarkets, and have a rather more nurturing relationship: they're not really interested in the 'pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap philosophy.

HtoHe - I'm surprised there isn't one in Wirral. I'd have thought there would be a market for it in the posher bits!
It is a bit odd, isn't it? In fact, most of the posher inhabitants of the peninsula tend to shop in Chester so perhaps it's even more amazing that Chester is even further from the nearest Waitrose (Sandbach) than I am from Formby. Still, the push north is clearly still in its early stages so maybe the Hoylake store will follow the Safeway-Morrisons-Waitrose pattern (it's currently Morrisons).

Waitrose have their main distributiion centre in Bracknell. Recently they announced the closure of their only Bracknell Supermarket, in the small Birch Hill shopping centre, just behind the South Hill Arts Centre (with its Wilde THeatre). Apparently the Waitrose management felt the area lowered the tone of Waitrose. I think you'll find that the chilled foods are still distributed from Theale, further down the M4 past Reading, Bryn. (Did a couple of weeks there circa 1992 in between jobs, quite the weirdest place I've ever worked in). The poor (or not so poor) burghers of Brackell will have to wander off to Wokingham or Sunningdale now, I suppose, for their fix of Waitrose goodies. Ma hairt bleeds....

I meant West Kirby, not Hoylake - just in case anyone was thinking of paying the store a visit!!

Nah, there's a direct bus link to Windsor, where the new Waitrose openned just over a month ago.

South-East London doesn't have any Waitroses at all I don't expect them to have one in my (extremely downmarket) area, but there are some very Waitrosey areas nearby and there aren't any there either. A Dulwich branch would do very well, and I'd be able to walk there. Blackheath's got the right sort of demographic too, and no proper supermarket of its own. I wouldn't shop there all the time, but it would be a useful shop to have around.

but now there's one in Morningside (posh Edinburgh) so I'll have a trip down there every six months or so instead, particularly if they're stocking those wonderful Orkney Black potatoes this winter....
I'll have a look if you'd like.

That's most kind of you, hh. They're very little potatoes, and in previous years they've sold them prepackaged. Wonderful rubbed in olive oil and sea salt and roasted in the oven - they don't take very long at all, because of their size: they're called blacks, but the insides are more a veined purple, and the flavour is wonderfully intense.

I'm supposed to be heading up that way to Bruntsfield for lunch, so time permitting I'll see if I can fit a further wander in.

Curses. Lunch is out today (not in general, just in Bruntsfield) so I'm not going to be heading out that way for a few days. I'll try to remember to have a look during the next week and give a potato bulletin then.

I trust you will find that which you Sikh this afternoon, hh. There's no particular hurry for the tatties: in previous years Waitrose has stocked them until beyond Christmas.

I have often deliberated whether to try those black potatoes (the colour put me off) but as Ron recommends them I'll give them a whirl.
In view of the freezing weather here last night was super-hot chillie, this afternoon (whilst the match is on) I will be slowing cooking beef in Guinness (again!) I might then put some sliced potatoes on top Lancashire hotpot style and, of course, there will be SPROUTS!
The water in the bird bath is a block of solid ice, the sky is grey and threatening rain, not a day for going out and about.

My dinner tonight is going to involve lentils, bacon, cabbage, pak choi, peppers, leek, and potatoes. Haven't quite decided how to assemble that little lot into a suitable dish but I'm salivating just thinking about it.

Anty, I'd no more let the colour put you off than the red in cabbage (which I also adore).
