Well since it took so long to work out who he is, the answer to the second question is pretty obvious I think you would love his music, John. autoharp: how did you find out that it was Arthur Lourié?

pim,
I am fond of Russian music and I see quite a number of CDs at Amazon featuring Arthur Lourié. Is that the spelling that is always used?

Hi Pim - I sort of recognised the picture with the cigarette: immediate thought (like someone else) was that it was Tansman. Didn't look at the thread for a couple of days so saw all the clues at once this evening (Roslavets + head of Soviet whatsit + undervalued composer) and made educated guess.

I already said that, time_is_now! Sorry, pim I don't read this thread v often (too tempting!). That'll teach me to leap in thinking I'm being clever when in fact you're much cleverer than me

John, There are indeed a few CDs around with music by Arthur Lourié (or Arthur Vincent Lourié as he is called sometimes). I've put up a fragment of his music on sendspace: http://www.sendspace.com/file/8l86tePlease let me know what you think of it. If you like it, I can put up some more. Lourié wrote in different styles when he was young. This piece is a good example of the music he wrote in his later years when he lived in the United States.

I did not know much about Arthur Lourié. I am trying to find out now. His music to which I am thanking pim_derks, is very original. Because he left Russia he was never mentioned (like Stravinsky). It is very intersting.
pim_derks, How did you find out about him?

My copy of the Oxford Companion to Music still has Arthur Lourié as being alive, even though he died in 1966. That is the tenth edition dating from 1970 but it was printed in 1995 and it was updated to take account of the deaths of Stravinsky and Shostakovich in the 1970s, for example.
It seems as though not much notice was taken of Lourié towards the end and nobody saw fit to correct the OCM during those 25 years.

My Oxford concise dictionary of 1980 has Lourie. He died in 1966. His works include two operas, two syms, several large0scale religious works, 3 str. quts. He wrote biography of Koussevitzky (eng. edn 1931).

Not my favourite style of music but I think I could listen to it. Yes if Lourié composed in other styles I'd like to hear one more piece please John W

the quiz that time forgot... I think it's just that most of us haven't got a clue who they are ! Well, that's speaking personally anyway. We need one of the heavy hitters like IGI or tonybob....er no, it's your quiz isn't it ?

Thank you all very much for your reactions. I don't want to fill up this quiz section with discussions about Arthur Lourié, so I opened a new topic about him the Music Appreciation section: http://r3ok.myforum365.com/index.php?topic=819.0I put up a new fragment and I will put up more music later on.

Tricky. Knowing the nationalities might help narrow it down - a few guesses:
1. American (possibly having emigrated from Europe) 2. Scandinavian? 3. Russian (possibly influenced by the Yeltsin likeness!) 4. British? or possibly linked to a UK orchestra? Looks familiar...

Those were roughly my nationality guesses too IGI though I had No 2 down as German. There's a hint of Norman Lamont as well as Boris Yeltsin about No 3 which conjures up alarming possibilities about his parenthood..... I've a feeling I'm not really getting any closer on any of them
