Just attempted to copy a DVD on my laptop, using Roxio....it copied the source disc OK, but when I tried to burn a copy, it kept rejecting the blank disc I'd put in - a Datasafe disc which should be suitable for DVD recording, according to its label.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

No problems with the post here, SK, although I'm not positive I quite grasp your problem. The first question to ask though must be: does the laptop burner accept both DVD+R and DVD-R discs? If not, have you inserted the correct type?

Another question is does the laptop actually have a DVD burner in it rather than just a DVD drive.

Not that daft a question. A colleague of mine tried just such a trick recently with his combined CD reader/writer and DVD read only drive. He'd bought a stack of 100 DVD-Rs in advance of the exercise, too. I have recommended he get an external USB2 DVD writer.

[By the way, the best program, by far, that I have found for 'backing up' DVD's (including the commercial ones), is DVD Shrink. It is free, and legal to download and use for copying material you hold the copyright to. It is, however, illegal to sell it. It will even let you burn the 'copy' to any region of your choice, including region free. Also, certain LiteOn writers can have their region coding reset as many time as you like, using a freely downloadable piece of software.]

That all brings back memories.

I remember buying Japanese movies way back, watching them in my PC DVD player by changing the Region coding, then wondering after several (5) goes, why I could no longer change the region.

There was a free piece of software back then, but don't know if there are any free ones now.

But thankfully there IS still software like it about. Though not having tried this package personally.....  Smiley

For whenever in DVD Shrink you encounter encryption problems, use your own [UK] decrypting program: DVDDecrypter (no longer around but has been saved in below link[:
