I don’t know if anyone here has used emusic.com for downloading music, but they have a tempting 2 week free trial period which I took advantage of on Friday. You sign up and get 25 free downloads to use within a two week period. So long as you don’t go over the 25 and cancel within two weeks, you don’t pay a penny! The good news is that they have BIS, Naxos/Marco Polo and Lyrita amongst their offerings. I had fun searching and selected some pieces/composers I wanted to explore a bit more. Here’s the musical feast I ended up with:

Leifs – Hekla and a movement from Baldr
Musgrave – Clarinet Concerto (de Peyer) and Narcissus (solo flute work)
MacMillan – The Confession of Isobel Gowdie; Tuireadh
Tveitt - Variations on a Folk Song from Hardanger
Markevitch - Envol d'Icare
Tavener - The Myrrh-Bearer
Aho - Contrabassoon Concerto
El-Khoury - Lebanon in Flames

Four and a half hours of music downloaded for free can’t be bad. I listened to the Aho, the Musgrave concerto, Tuireadh and Hekla on the train to/from London yesterday and look forward to hearing the others over the next couple of days.

I don't know if this may be of interest to members; iTunes are selling the complete Harnoncourt Beethoven set (the symphonies, Creatures of Prometheus ballet, Violin Concerto, Missa solemnis + overtures) for £7.99 the lot! A staggering bargain.  Smiley

I have been with emusic for almost a year, and have a lot to thank it for. Without it, I would probably have not been exposed to numerous Jazz and Classical music artists for quite some time. I have learnt a lot, and particularly enjoy the emusic dozens, which any member can create which normally showcase certain available artists, based on a theme.

Another music download site, recently launched:

HDtracks

From their home page:

Quote
We offer thousands of titles across a multitude of musical genres and in-depth information about the artists and albums. When you purchase a complete album from HDtracks you will receive a PDF file containing the cover art and liner notes.

We offer CD-quality music in your choice of three formats -- AIFF, FLAC, and 320 kbps MP3. Plus, our downloads are always DRM-free, so they can be played everywhere, including home music servers and MP3 players (including iPods).

The site is still in its early stages, so downloads are only Windows compatible at the moment. Also, for now it's only available in the US - but the combination of high definition files and liner notes is very attractive for the future. The list of labels on board so far is modest, but high quality.
