Heard his Violanta Prelude tonight and found myself wondering about my response to this music, which went along the lines of:

quite like this

reminds me of... ...oh yeah, Respighi... ...and... ...film music... ...and... ...a sort of simplified version of Salome...

do I like this?

it's quite effective... ...it's a bit simplistic... ...yeah but it's still quite effective... ... yeah but it's not really - you know - top drawer stuff is it...

I quite like this

I could get fed up with it very quickly

Am I just being musically elitist here? Or do others share these quality judgement experiences, not necessarily about Korngold, but about any other composers? Is there a basis here for making meaningful quality judgements? Do they (quality judgements) have any relevance in 2007?

Perhaps you're being a bit tough on yourself there, Ros. How old was he when he wrote it? Seventeen, wasn't it? So it's possibly going to have more gaps to see through than his later works. I certainly find myself doing this with certain works I haven't heard before, and certain new performances of things I know, too: but if it's more than a fleeting thought, then there's almost bound to be something seriously wrong somewhere to allow my attention to be so distracted.

I own a (very good) recording of Violanta and I tend to share Ros's feelings, re: the music.

That isn't to say that I don't enjoy it (I do); just that Korngold isn't the most individual of composers.

The Roscza Fiddle Concerto is a better score than the Korngold I think, and I was struck by the symphonic weight of the interpretations-at its best much better music than is generally recognised
in terms of its formal argument imho.Indeed the way episodes and gestures are timed made me think appositely about my own orchestral-effort- in- progress.

Does anybody remember the ending of the Left hand Piano Concerto?

Once heard, never forgotten.

I played the piano part of the Lieder des Abschieds last week and thought it was very fine.

Having only ever heard the version of this work with orchestra (which I think is wonderful), I'm very keen to hear the one with piano.

Best,
