I noticed a few mentions of Southwell the other day.

I get there a couple of times a year, usually, and go to evensong. It's not the nerest cathedral to me, but it's the nearest where the music is of a really high standard.

I'm off down to Notts in a week or so and when I checked their website to see what was on for evensong, I noticed various concerts. They appear to be having a Festival during the summer - an eclectic mix if ever there was one - from the Royal Harpist to Gavin Bryars! Some interesting organ recitals throughout the year, too.

Here's the link for anyone who might be interested:

For those who haven't been, it's a real gem of a little market town: tiny, really, with this great Norman Minster stuck rather incongruously in the middle of it! The Minster cafe is superb: not too expensive with a great range of food. I gather from chatting to locals that their big problem is accommodation: there's only one decent hotel and visitors have to stay nearer to Nottingham or in outlying pubs. That's a shame.

The Emperor suspected they were right. But he dared not stop and so on he walked, more proudly than ever. And his courtiers behind him held high the train... that wasn't there at all.
