Last Thursday we heard the last 3 Beethoven Sonatas from this pianist whom I had been greatly looking forward to hearing. I was not disappointed: indeed, I found it memorable from the first note to the last. The only passage that seemed at all prosaic was a page from the last movement of Op 110. Beautiful tone throughout, and personal without yanking the music around. Vol 2 of his Beethoven Sonatas was on sale afterwards - I bought it. I decided that if his playing held my attention throughout Op 22 (which I regard as the most 'bog-standard' sonata), I would think I had good value for money. Well, I do. I now know which stereo sonata cycle I shall buy.

I always hesitate to give an opinion on pianists, as I'm not very knowledgeable in that field, but I have been very impressed by Paul Lewis the few times I've heard him.
