If anybody is going to this concert in the DeMontfort Hall next Tuesday, Feb. 13th, I'll be there handing out Rachmaninoff Society leaflets (from the Philharmonia stand in the entrance hall).

Please say Hi! (and consider joining the Society - but no pressure!!)

Programme:
Nielsen - Helios Overture
Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No. 3
Sibelius - Symphony No. 5
Philharmonia Orchestra/Gustavo Dudamel/Boris Berezovsky

It is good to know that there are people here that love Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky. It is very reassuring for me because I met a few people who look down on both.
Best wishes,

What did you think of the concert, Rachfan? My son (who is also a bit of a Rach fan though not yet up to the society-joining stage, I think) went to the same programme in the Queen Elizabeth Hall and enjoyed it a lot, though it wasn't faultless, I gather.

Hi Mary!  I enjoyed it immensely and was most impressed by Boris Berezovsky - I have a number of his recordings but had not heard him live.  BB seemed to make the horrendously difficult Rach 3 seem almost easy.  Interestingly, a Rach prelude offered as an encore was as fast, fluid, and smooth as I have ever heard it but it was a bit short on heart.  Dudamel (also a first for me) and the orchestra (as usual) were impressive, too.  It was intriguing to hear a volatile Venezuelan dealing rather well with the icy wastes of Scandinavian Sibelius and Nielsen's attempt at 'sunrise to sunset' in the Helios overture.

I heard from a friend who went to the London concert two days later that BB was 'not on top form' (a euphemism, I think).  Too many mistakes, a cut in the 3rd mvt. and a feeling 'his heart was not in it'.  The orchestra got a good report, though.

I am told that the second concert will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on 2 March so it will be worth a listen, if only to see if BB really was so disappointing!  I think Leicester was lucky; the concert was much appreciated.  A pity, perhaps, that the Leicester concert was not recorded.

The second (London) performances are indeed on R3 tomorrow, March 2nd, at 7.00.  Should be worth a listen, if only to see if the criticism of BB was fair...

I am not qualified to criticise, but I have listened to very many different performances of the Rachmaninov No. 3 both on CD and live and used to have a (mini) copy of the score, I think the criticism of Berezovsky (on Radio 3 recording) wasjustified.

When I was at the Barbican yesterday, I asked if they had any information about Arcadi Volodos, whose recording of No. 3 took over from Vladimir Ashkenazy's in my opinion some eight years ago, but even this box office young man could not find his future programme. I have tried everything I can think of but no luck. I used to have his agent's name, but lost it years ago.  If you can give me a lead on this, I would be most grateful.
