Yesterday we were visited by the London Mozart Trio (Krzysztof Smietana violin, Colin Stone piano, Leonid Gorokhov cello) for the first concert in "my" recital series.

The first item was Beethoven's Archduke trio. At the end of the first movement applause broke out from some of the audience because they thought they had been listening to a one-movement work by Rachmaninov, but that was because of an error in the programme. The Rachmaninov opened the second half - his Trio Elegiaque op 8, a work I had never heard before. The trio in D minor op 49 by Mendelssohn was the last scheduled work, followed by an encore: Schubert's Notturno D897.

Though I say it myself, I'm always gratified that we get good audiences - the hall was as full as fire regulations would permit - even if some of them can't tell the difference between Beethoven and Rachmaninov! And the players give superb performances, last night being no exception. There's never any going on auto-pilot just because they're playing in a quiet part of the country.

Afterwards a few of us went with them to the nearest pub and I took the photo below. I know I'm a bit out of the way (a corner of Shropshire) but should any of you happen to be able to make it over here, do introduce yourselves (better still, alert me in advance) and join us!

Tony

Really cheering

If I lived out of London, I would probably make a point of going to anything that was on.  As it is, I am idle, and fail to support what is on.  Perhaps they just applauded after Movement 1 because they thought the playing had been fantastic.

It is so easy to forget with so much recorded music available how miraculous music making is in the first place.
