Hmm, not doing very well with replies to my topics here
Never mind, I'll have another go. I don't know whether anyone knows
Kenneth Hamilton - he's an excellent concert pianist (Liszt being his favourite) who teaches at Birmingham University but he's also a very funny speaker. He gave a couple of lecture-cum-recitals last Tuesday and today which I've been to.
Today's was mainly about Mendelssohn's approach to writing "Celtic" music and he included Mendelssohn's Fantasy On 'the Last Rose Of Summer', Op. 15. By way of a contrast, he then played a few excerpts from a really dreadful set of variations on the same tune which he'd found on the internet. After a bit of Googling I've also found it - it's by Henri Herz (1803-88) and the score is
here but to save you downloading the whole thing, here's the final variation which had us all laughing when Kenneth Hamilton played it. As he said, Herz couldn't think of anything else to do with his material so he just rapidly repeats each note.
If you ever get a chance to hear KH talking about music, do go.
NB I found the score at the International Music Score Library Project
