On the eve of an American tour, the LA Times has this profile of the orchestra still known amongst Russian musicians as "The Leningrad Phil".

As the only orchestra left in Russia (outside the Mariinsky) who are still making commercial recordings, they really are the most accomplished orchestra in the country...  I go to their (rare) Moscow appearances with sense of keen anticipation, that this is one of the world's great orchestras....
