I'm considering this:

http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/music/productions/messiaen-study-day-1213

or at least the evening performance part of it. What I'm not sure about is the afternoon part:

"Pierre-Laurent Aimard leads a study day, using film and discussion, with the Nash Ensemble exploring Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time, one of Messiaen's most mystical and profoundly spiritual pieces."

I really don't know what to expect from this. Has anyone been to anything like it or can hazard a guess at what it will involve? Is it likely to go way over my (uneducated) head?

IRF

Don't I remember you enjoying the Malcolm Arnold day which you said had some discussions ? And / or Jon Lord discussing his concerto ? This would probably just be a move on from those I would think.

Yes, I have found other discussion about music very interesting. But the phrase "study day" made me wonder if it would be pitched at music students rather than ignorant laypersons.

I think there's a whole Messian season going on?  Not just at the South Bank but lots of concerts are at the RAM.  I'm hoping to dip into a few, ought to be good value.

IRF, I've been on what they call 'study days', and in fact I've contributed to a couple. I'm sure everyone will be at pains to keep it accessible to the layman. It's just a way of saying that the music will be discussed and 'studied' - not heavily analysed, I'm sure. PLA and the Nash players are terrific, of course - give it a go!

Thanks. I'm still examining time and financial constraints but hopefully I'll be able to sort a trip out.

I've found that there is a lot a Messiaen around the country this year but I'm really keen on Quartet for the End of Time and performances of that seem few and far between. London isn't the best venue for me but it's the best  of a bad lot  Undecided

Ollie, you will remember that we discussed the book, briefly, some time ago. My order for the revised edition fell through, so I still only know the first edition. Are the revisions extensive? Should I try again to get a copy?

...Alas, Bryn, I only know the revised edition! I can't find any indication of what's new I'm afraid...  Undecided

Messiaen will have been 100 years old on December 10, 2008.
...would have been?

How do you express a future counterfactual? Huh

'Would have been'.

And a future don't-know-whether-it's-a-counterfactual-yet? 'Carter will hopefully be 100 years old on December 11, 2008.'

I just had a look at the back cover (via your link) and I don't think I will splash out on the updated version, but I might have a go at trying to see a copy.  There might even be a enough of it on that site.

Hmm. Just checked and the pages with most of the updated material appear to be in the appendices, and are not available in that  preview version.

Yup, comparing pagination, it looks like minor changes to the discography, plus a new appendix, (APPENDIX C) with associated notes. Basically it's everything between page 135 and 144 (inclusive), plus the notes for APPENDIX C.

You better. Wink

If you want the reasoning, it's because 'would' is both "did + will" but also "would + will". IfyaseewhatImean.
