Went to the Gateshead Sage yesterday to rehearse and perform Faure's Requiem.  Have done a few similar things there before but the Faure is one of my Desert Island Discs so this was special.

Great day with excellent sound, though not easy to achieve a real pianissimo with 900 voices!

900 voices Huh??! Was it one of those do-it-yourself performances, like a scratch Messiah? I'd have thought the Faure would be very difficult to do that way, not because the notes are difficult (they aren't) but because of the delicacy required - and yes, the pianissimos. What was "In Paradisum" like? I suppose not as hard as getting all those runs together in Messiah!

I've heard the In Paradisum (not to mention the whole work) being murdered at a rehearsed performance but am happy to report that all went well.  The orchestra--a section of the Northern Sinfonia--was a tremendous suport too.

This is the fourth time that I've taken part in a 'scratch' event at the Sage, having previously done Pirates of Penzance (when the Tall Ships were here in 2005), Haydn's Nelson Mass and Mozart's Requiem.  HMS Pinafore coming up on 10 March but, alas, I'm not available that day.

It's interesting, isn't it, that these events are so popular? A lot of people want to sing! What sort of age range do you get?

I am currently in a male voice choir and have sung in numerous mixed voice choirs, both church and secular, over many years.

Alas, even at 58 I reduce the average age a bit!  There weren't many youngsters at the event at the Sage on Saturday and I imagine that quite a few present were 70+.
