I don't think this has been mentioned yet so here's the website with all the details:

http://www.spitalfieldsfestival.org.uk/events.htm

Delighted to see that Member Johnson has a new piece being performed as part of Exaudi's concert on 13 June conducted by James Weeks who also posts here sometimes. Congratulations, Evan! Well, congratulations both!

Other than that I haven't spotted the names of any other R3OKers as yet unless Strina is involved perhaps in the Gabrieli Consort's concert at Wilton's Music Hall (Patron Milly Jones) on 2 June: it includes Classical Karaoke Shocked 'nestling between' two performances of Pergolesi's La Serva Padrona.

Any tips on what not to miss? I get the impression that Spitalfields may have had to draw in its horns a bit this year compared with recent years (financial reasons?) but I don't know enough about the background to know whether that is true or not.

Indeed this is the case, George, thank you for the congratulations!, and in fact my wife and I will be in attendance (this being the first time my work has been heard in London, or in England for that matter [I almost wrote the UK, but this same piece was premiered by EXAUDI in Edinburgh]), although that should not stop anyone from coming to the concert if they so choose.  Even if my work should bore or outrage you the Ferneyhough will be a not-to-be-missed experience, and if THAT should bore or outrage you then the Tudor things on the program should be equally extraordinary.

It is hardly likely to, though, being brief and quite beautiful.

I'd like to add that, in the highly unlikely event that you are bored or outraged by Evan's piece, Ferneyhough's piece AND the Tudor gubbins, then it's still worth going to hear Exaudi anyway, since they've got to be one of the classiest vocal ensembles I've ever heard. I'll be there.  Smiley

(financial reasons?)

Rosman and Knoop were quite outrageously expensive for that Flechtwerk piece, apparently.  Wink

So I heard, together with diva-ish behaviour in their excessive requirements for their respective dressing rooms. Asses' milk jacuzzis indeed! But I have to admit it was worth every penny, even if it did break the bank for the next three Festivals.

A spectacular concert it turned out to be too. This was my first time of hearing EXAUDI in the flesh and, as everyone has said, they are just phenomenal. Evan's piece was an intense and beautiful thing, gossamer threads of sound (voices and solo violin) at times right on the edge of silence. Pulse-stoppingly fragile. An amazing piece. Thank you Evan. [I should just add that we actually heard most of it twice because of a bizarre interruption from the audience first time round. The atmosphere and concentration was quickly recovered though, a tribute both to the piece and to the performers.]  And as well as some glorious Taverner and Sheppard, a stonking performance of Ferneyhough's Missa Brevis to finish with.

Yes. I was there.

Yes. It is.

I wish I'd seen this earlier, not because I could go but because I would have said how much I liked your piece when I heard it up here.
Nice to see Mieko playing in London again.

I should say that there was a bizarre interruption during the Edinburgh concert as well. A man who I think was recording the concert, in the middle of a piece by James Saunders, walked up to James Weeks and said 'When's the next piece starting then?'. I don't think it was in the score.

I too was an EXAUDI virgin last night. As well as seconding all George's comments on Evan's piece - which was beautiful, and a surprisingly good fit with the Tudor pieces too - I'd like to add that I've never heard Ferneyhough like that. I'm not exaggerating much when I say it had an almost heavy metal-like energy and intensity - comparisons with Xenakis and, especially, Birtwistle that I hadn't noticed before. Strong stuff. Terrific performances too, especially from the sopranos who were awesome.

EDIT: for those interested, more of my reactions to the concert are here.
